algorithmic modeling for Rhino

hi guys,

i wondered if someone may be able to help me, im failry new to rhino and am having trouble creating a facade that responds to a sun path/direction. can anyone please point me in the direction of a tutorial or anything that may help me.

the effect im hoping to achieve is something similar to this

Hi David,

A good resource here:

http://www.tedngai.net/
geco and grasshopper together make this pretty easy. http://www.grasshopper3d.com/profiles/blogs/geco-gh2ecotect-beta-re...
Assuming one has ecotect, yes. If all you need is a sunpath, Ted Ngai's conversion of NOAA's solar position algorithm is dead on (and free). You can also generate analemmas to sum shading through out the course of a year.

That being said, I look forward to one day convincing my boss to buy an ecotect license and giving geco a spin. :)
thanks for the advice guys.
i have seen the tedngai website and have incorporated some of the definitions into my model but what i want to do is produce an animation showing the facade adapting. can anyone help, thanks?
can u specify what do you mean with facade adapting? I'm also doing something similar, there are solar panels on the façade of my project which are rotating with the movement of sun, but it is still conceptual and needs a lot of work on it. the logic that is behind my façade is panels following an attractor point, but i need to develop it more before it works logically.

after your specifiment of the façade that you are talking about, i'll update my definition and share it here. i hope that will help you.
once you have the definition performing the way you want....

straight out of gh, you can right click on a slider, (the one that influences the change your are trying to illustrate), and choose "animate". this will allow you to set a few options and then dump the frames, (viewports screenshots), to a folder.

as far as dealing with the facade, did you get the logic working the way you want? David posted a REALLY nice/simple way to start here,
http://www.grasshopper3d.com/forum/topics/orient-issue

from there, it's not a far jump to placing some geometry on those planes and then having them react to some influence.

thanks ever so much for this, i think ive pretty much got it now.
i've seen a few discussions about rendering the animation on vray although when i tried to download the ghx file with the vbscript component all i get is a webpage full of scripting :S
most times, if you click a direct link to a ghx file, you will see the xml for it displayed in your browser.
right click and choose save as, then change the file type from .xml to all files, then manually replace the .xml extension with .ghx.

good luck with your facade!
Thank you, the knowledge and help on this forum is incredible, i will post some pictures of the final product.
I'm continually impressed by it. Its an astonishingly active and helpful community of tinkerers, mad scientists, and wizards of weird.
