Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Just thought I'd post a very general topic and canvas some opinion. I am currently re-working my own website from the ground up and am trying to describe the sort of work I do with Grasshopper and other tools, how would you describe this emerging field of design skills?

- Form Finding

- Meta Design

- Computational Design

- Parametric Design

- Evolutionary Algorithms

- Generative Design

I am working in both the product design and Architectural markets so I'd be interested to know how everyone on here terms their work. I think I like the idea of "Meta Design" as an overall goal, but I think perhaps "Computational Design" is perhaps the most widely understood (or understandable) term. Thoughts?

well, the main thing is at least we can keep talking about it. It will be interesting to see how these trends develop, also, outside the design world, there has been discussion of whole classes of jobs disappearing and being replaced in years to come by algorithms - "the end of work"

I think you are right to call them skills, so maybe you should also distinguish between modelling or designing. I find design to be a much more broad work, as oppose to modelling which would be a process in the design effort. For example: industrial design, aeronautical design, fashion designer...

Perhaps industrial designer skilled in:

parametric modelling, procedural modelling...

Yeah, maybe it is better to keep the design and modelling separate, though I'm not sure as when you start scripting and writing algorithms, you embed at least part of the design thinking.
