8.0050 install problem on V4

He'll probably need to install the new C++ Runtimes as outlined on the 0.8.0050 release page: http://www.grasshopper3d.com/forum/topics/grasshopper-0-8-0050-avai...

 

Note you have to download and install the 32-bit version (x86), not the 64-bit version.

I'd love to, but the installer is out of my hands and I don't want to hog Seattle resources that are needed to get Rhino5 shipped. I know it's a pretty painful situation right now, I don't know how to solve it without delaying Rhino5.

 

Well, I suppose I could spend a few weeks or so learning how to write installers...

'trying to install Kangaroo now.

I "unblocked" the KangarooPhysics0065.gha file (never heard of that "blocked file" thing before, but anyway..) , and the components do not appear in Grasshopper.

 

Is this a version compatibility issue ?

Is there a table which lays out which component version is compatible whith which Grasshopper build ?

Hi Olivier,

 

KP 0.065 is working with GH 0.8.0050 in Rhino 4 and 5 as far as I can tell.

One thing you need to make sure is that you remove all other previous versions of Kangaroo. (they could be in various locations - see some of the discussion towards the bottom of this page http://www.grasshopper3d.com/group/kangaroo)

It worked....but :

That (C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Roaming\Grasshopper\Libraries) is kind of hidden from view/ not very noob-friendly

Anyway, if (C:\Program Files\Rhinoceros 4.0\Plug-ins\Grasshopper\Components) isn't the right place to install components in the newer verions of GH, shouldn't it be simply deleted to avoid this kind of trouble and confusion ?

I also installed "Weaverbird", and it worked  : I can see the tab and components in GrassHopper, except I have no idea where the component is.

It's in none of the two places you mentionned.

I also "installed" HoopSnake, meaning that I put it where it made the most sense : (C:\Program Files\Rhinoceros 4.0\Plug-ins\Grasshopper\Components)

So I do get a Tab called "Extra" with only the Hoopsnake component, whereas Weaverbird and Kangaroo have their own tab name.

 

David, shouldn't there be a clear rule as to where the components should be installed and how to manage the Tab names ?

Run the Rhino Command GrasshopperDeveloperSettings and it should show you all of the locations that GH loads Libraries from.

I get the same paths as you.

But still, I find that there should be one "official" and if possible , simple path where to put those components.

I'd rather spend my time playing with GH than trying to figure out where all the ducklings have scattered...

 

Also, with the newest GH, I can't get Kangaroo to show up.

Yeah and another good thing would be to get David to go through all the third-party plug-ins line by line to make sure that they conform to the GH way!

 

Note the sarcasm :) I agree with you that there should be uniformity in third party development especially in placement of icons on the toolbar and plug-ins with very few functions should follow the Extra method like (Hoopsnake and SPM to name but a few), but we have to bear in mind that developers are free to make their own decisions on these matters. If you wish to change their minds then approach them directly, but remember not all plug-ins are solely used in Grasshopper.

Unfortunately Grasshopper 0.8.0051 makes some changes that mean Kangaroo 0.065 (the latest) is no longer compatible.

At first glance the necessary changes don't look too major, but I might be needing David's help with some of them, and I don't want to bother him too much on his holiday.

As for installation folders - I think it now is reasonably standard that 3rd party plugins like mine go in the Libraries folder accessed from the File>Special Folders>Components Folder (and the plugin should be installable here by just dragdropping the gha onto the gh canvas). The need to mention other locations is just a hangover from much earlier versions where this was not the case, so people can remove conflicting previous installations of Kangaroo.

I know I originally located Kangaroo in the Extra tab, but as its number of components grew it just seemed to make sense to give it space of its own.

Oh gawd !

I wad dying to try out Kangaroo today.

I've got some exciting research going on about a flexible hydrofoil...

Reverted to previous GH : The Kangaroo is back !
