It essentially replicates the Solmetric's Annual Insolation Lookup tool.What it does is that it creates a grid of points. Each point represents the calculated annual insolation on the surface (PV module, SWH collector, facade, any kind of surface) for a single tilt and azimuth angle.Each point is then elevated according to the annual insolation values. The mesh is created from that grid of points. The portion of the mesh which is the highest, represents the optimal tilt and azimuth angles. So the higher your "precision_" input is, the more points in a mesh you'll have - thus the more precise final optimal tilt and azimuth will be.For the diffuse component of the annual incident solar radiation for each point the Perez 1990 modified model is used. Direct is from classical cosine law, and Ground reflected component from Liu and Jordan (1963).So TOF component calculates the optimal tilt and azimuth based on annual incident solar radiation, not AC energy....…
nt should stand up to reasonable, Socratic interrogation with logical and descriptive rigor. For example, I find entirely credible an architect who suggests that he placed his buildings 20 meters apart because he thought that it would make people more comfortable in light of his reading of the space relative to its environment, materiality, expected time of habitation/circulation, etc. His "thinking" such things is, for the most part intuitive, and backed by deductive logic. (Of course integration of wind analysis and other harder readings is obviously desirable) But I interpret the active denial of intuition's crucial role in design as at the heart of its current deplorable trending toward misuse of terminology, application of pseudo-science and intellectual over-reach. Architects wade out of their waters precisely when they invoke such things as human psychology or perception.
Furthermore, I believe that architects - student and professionals alike - regularly make formal decisions according to their aesthetic judgement. To suggest that students aren't qualified to make a design decision during their studies because they think it's formally successful seems exceedingly stingy; likewise, suggesting that a professional architect shouldn't rely on it is puzzling to me. I find architects' attempts to justify what are obviously decisions based on formal taste using other means often taking the same form of obfuscation that makes architects appear to be intellectual charlatans to specialists in other fields. Taste is taste. I would agree that it can't be taught. But good architectural design certainly remains at least somewhat grounded in artistic sensibility.
3) I'm by no means advocating that all architects must master every detail in their work. Rather, that architects have at least a generalist's working knowledge of materials and construction systems. Floors don't levitate, and windows require depth; rules of thumb count as vital knowledge.
4) I would say that consideration of performance-driven properties falls under basic understanding of how a building will operate in its given environment. For example, if you've designed a glass house in Arizona, ur doing it wrong. The more simulation and science you have, the better. Indeed, I think that such elements - wind analysis, solar gain analysis, structural performance - represent the most solid opportunities today for architects to assert the harder lines of defense in their design decision making...say for example, being able to demonstrate using basic geometry that your shade keeps the sun out in summer, but lets it in when it's cold.…

The name PAR is used to designate the radiation with wavelengths useful for plant photosynthesis. It is accepted that the PAR radiation ranges from 400 to 700 nm (McCree, 1972), although some authors consider the PAR from 350 to 850 nm.
The composition of the radiation changes with time, as a function of the Sun’s elevation and the cloudiness. When the Sun is low over the horizon, the short wavelengths are reduced (less UV and more red). The clouds reduce the amount of energy, greatly decreasing the NIR.
The PAR proportion in relation to the global radiation increases with scattering (diffusion). It is lower with clear sky and in the summer (45–48%).

he Summer in the City program, part of the Portland School of Architecture and Allied Arts (an extension to University of Oregon).
Using both Grasshopper and the Firefly plug-in, this workshop will focus on the design of innovative facade prototypes that are configurable, sensate, and active. Students will become familiar with the terminology used in interactive facade design including an overview of hardware (ie.sensors, actuators, and programmable microcontrollers) as well as software interfaces terminology. We'll learn new prototyping techniques and develop digital and physical models which can respond to a plurality of environmental and user driven forces. This workshop will take a hands-on approach, and you will walk away with the ability to build your own custom electronic circuits (using the Arduino), as well as create interactive simulations and models.
This course will primarily focus on physical computing techniques. Unfortunately, given the time constraints of the workshop, I will not be able to provide an extensive overview of the Grasshopper interface (it is suggested that participants have some familiarity with the Rhino/Grasshopper environment). There are many great online resources to get you up to speed relatively quickly if you are new to this software. This is a good place to start.

Objetivos:
El curso está dirigido a cada diseñador, ingeniero o arquitecto que quiere obtener una sólida base en modelado generativo y paramétrico dentro del flujo de trabajo en Rhinoceros.
En el curso se explorarán y construirán estructuras en el espacio paramétrico, incorporando entidades geométricas (Curvas, Superficies, Puntos, etc…) y usando patrones algorítmicos para la generación de estructuras con metabolismos contextualizados.
Cada paso será soportado con ejercicios que gradualmente incrementarán su complejidad.
El alumno aprenderá cómo trabajar con asociación geométrica y parámetros. Para perfeccionar asociación geométrica – asociación entre partes, asociación dinámica – las formas geométricas son generadas al seguir la conexión lógica entre la parte geométrica y sus restricciones, dimensión paramétrica y él proceso dinámico del diseño: Estimulamos el pensamiento relacional para la construcción de Diseño y Arquitectura de alto desempeño.
Resultados:
Los participantes con éste entrenamiento obtendrán las siguientes fundamentos.

ur setup. Can you say what sensor you are using? Are you using an Arduino to write this ascii information to the serial port? If so, there may be some formatting code for the string that you'll need to do to get the Read component to function properly. I see that you were able to open the port and Start reading... so my first thought is that the data is formatted correctly....
All of the read components look for a specific character (in this case two characters) to indicate when it has reached the end of the line being read and should spit out the data. In this case, Firefly uses the Carriage Return (\r) and Line Feed (\n) to know when it has reached the end of the line. In arduino, these are automatically added to any line if you use the Serial.println("blah, blah, blah"); command. Notice, this is different from the Serial.print("nothing to see here"); command. This doesn't mean that you can't still use the regular print command... it's just you need to use the println command to indicate when you've reached the end of the line. Let's take a look at a simple example.

The first print statement prints a string to the serial port... and the next one adds the current sensor value... and THEN adds the carriage return and line feed to start a new line. The nice thing about using these together is that you can concatenate any type of data you want. If you were to upload this sketch, you should see a sentence being printed to the serial port that says "The value of the sensor is: 512". I made up the number, but you get the idea. Notice, I also had to include a delay function. You don't always need this (there are other ways to go about this) but the important thing to note is that the loop cycle on the Arduino can run really fast. I mean... really fast. So, you wont want to send so much data over to GH, because this could flood the string buffer in the Read component and cause it to crash (eventually). It's a good idea to add some small time interval just to slow it down a bit. I should say that I've optimized the refresh rate in the next release so it's significantly faster... so hopefully this wont be as big of a problem... but hopefully that helps some.
Now... Why are you writing data to a sensor? Sensors by default are considered inputs... so I'm quite confused as to why you would want to send data back (if you are... then you need some way to handle the string data being sent from GH... this is the whole reason we built the Firefly firmata... it sets up the two-way protocol so you don't have to deal with all of that mess... If you're going to read and write, you're better off just uploading the firmata and using the Uno Read and Write components). Also, I'm not very familiar with the Hyperterm or Advanced Serial Port Terminal... but I will say that could get COM conflicts if you're trying to open the port with different tools. Anyway, I hope some of this helps you get up and running.

(2) is a lot more flexible and (1) may not work at all as it will prevent any reuse above and below the separator.
