algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi all,

I need help smoothing a big amount of nodes like this one.(4 and 5 directions..) I want just one single smooth surface. (All at once, not modelling with tsplines one by one..)

I tried to convert it into one single mesh and then use weaverbird but its difficult. ( spheres, booleans etc..)

I think this is the key point. Convert this pipes into meshes and then merge them withweaverbird or tsplines. The problem are the booleans..

Any idea?

Cheers!!

Just discovered this. Its very cool. We are doing something similar for an installation in Copenhagen, though for now, we aim to do the joints as true nurbs. Will keep this place posted. Can I ask, who manufactured the joints?

thx

Morten

Prototypes were made at i.materialise.com. The final joints were printed by another company, an Italian one, which was much cheaper. I don't have the contact details though...

Looking forward to seing your work and concepts. I tried the nurbs-only approach at first but using t-splines was just much, much easier. Especially with circular tube sections and arbitrary meeting angles.

With rectangular sections and a network of rods which follow a surface more or less it's fairly easy to get a satisfactory result with simple lofts and patches:

Thanks. Is it the design studio who has the contact to the printing company?

The structure is a voronoi volume, we haven't made final decisions on profile, but were thinking round. Rectangular looks nice though! Gives a nice character and possible play of highlights...

thanks again.

I'll send you a PM

Did you see the work posted by Matt H earlier this year? Similar themes to your original project.

Yup, I've come across it recently on instructables, thanks for pointing to Matt here on the forum.

Very nice aesthetics. Though these are not smooth nodes...

I'd love to see a generic solution for a smooth junction/blend between arbitrary shapes meeting at arbitrary angles... :

Here a solution, not the perfect one but work on some cases. Component here

Excellent!

:-)

Jacek!

you please tell how to do this, using the node with lofts and patches?

This looks great! I've done something similar to make a geodesic dome but I wanted to add glass/polycarb/perspex panes and whilst imagining the  construction process thought "this is going to be impossible to put together" so I ended up splitting all the pieces in half to accomodate the planes and make assembly possible...

Now I've stopped because...

* The cost of 3d printing all the nodes is quite expensive

* It would be expensive to find out if it's strong enough or not

* I've been looking into the possibility of making moulds to cast the nodes from a tough resin.

I noticed you've actually made your design... was it a nightmare to assemble ?

Hi martyn

While 3d printing costs are dropping, I still think it wont soon be replaced by mould casting. If one thought of mass producing a Backyard Play Dome. Ikea would not
use 3d printing to make the joint components:)

I was also thinking if using one clockwise (r) and one anticlockwise (l) thread at each end of each strut would work in putting together such dome with a universal threaded joint. That 6 sided Universal joint would consist of one clockwise followed by one anticlockwise thread x 2 more times to make 6 threaded connections/Universal joint.

you can't screw the struts with panes of glass in them!

It's a nice idea though.

I think if IKEA were going to make it they would pay for injection mould tools and use glass reinforced nylon.

I also don't think it's an IKEA kind of design :)
