Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi everybody,

I'm quite in the beginning of this journey across this digital software world, mainly on visualization. One of the problems that I bumped into was realistic grass representation, principally closer to the camera. Searching on the web, I heard about proxys can be a way of making grass. So, I came up with this gh file to help me distribute the proxy's randomily.

I leave the 3dm and gh file attached for everybody who wants it and feel free to criticize or make other sugestions about realistic grass representation or the the grasshopper definition.

Thanks for your attention,

Manuel

Hi Manuel,

First of all, nice definition you came up with, I just made a few changes so that you could have a nice distribution over trimmed surfaces, without duplicate elements. Nevertheless, I don't see how could you use this as a proxy in rhino, at least not as you have in max, for eg. If you know how please let me know as it would be of great help. Also, it seems you have to step the number of items a little bit, so that you could have a nice blancket of grass.

Let us know how it goes,

João

Hi João,

thanks for the improvements that you made on the definition. It seems to work just fine.

Referring to use of proxy in rhino, I use as renderer engine the V-Ray for Rhino 1.5 that has this option of creation proxy from nurbs of meshes (I think this command only comes with this version of V-ray). You just need to left click on the icon marked in the jpg attached to save a proxy, and right click to import. In Grasshopper, the deffinition works just the same, just need to replace old nurbs grass geometries for the new "proxy".

Hope that becomes usefull to you,

Manuel

Hello João,  hello Manuel

I am very interested in using this plugin, since I am a total newbie concerning grasshopper could you maybe be so kind and explain to me very briefly the steps i have to do to distribute a block (grass leaves) across a surface in my model...

I would really apreciate it

thanks

Hi Andreas,

I don't think I can explain as briefly as you would want, but here goes. With those three surfaces Manuel posted, or ones similar to those, and with the latest Vray rendering plugin, create V-ray proxies, by selecting these three surfaces, clicking the icon similiar to the one highlighted in Untitled-1.jpg. Now that you have you proxies, just import them to the file you want the grass on, open the grasshopper definition, you set the surface where you want the grass to be distributed ( in this particular definition the surface must have non-zero values for any of the 3 dimensions), and set each of the proxies to the geometry boxes.  Use the sliders to see how you like it more - for more density you can add more points, but beware a large number of points may render you computer very slow.

I don't know if you want a more detailed insight on how the definition works, if you do let me know.

João

is there a way to increase the density? after loading the files i wasnt able to have it very dense, no matter how much of the sliders i adjusted. Great idea, especially for supporting proxies!! :D
