In the grasshopper pdf manual, there is a section that shows how to do this.

Do you mean The Grasshopper Primer, Second Edition – for version 0.6.0007?
I only can find an explanation on how to export to excel, not how to import from excel.
Maybe I missed it. Can you help with the chapter number?

Yes it is on page 116 Chapter 14.13 of the Grasshopper Primer. It has been written to read
in 3d Coordinate points but you can always modify it to read in additional columns of data.
