Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi guys,

I´ve been trying to write an open studio file but I´ve been getting this:

Any ideas on why could that be?

Thanks!,

Alejandro

Hi Alejandro,

This is because of some recent changes that Chien Si made for advanced HVAC systems. Sorry! I added an exception to the component so it works in your file. I'm also interested to know who and why are you trying to use OpenStudio and not EnergyPlus in this case?

Cheers,

Mostapha

Hi Mostapha, thanks for the file!

In regards to your question, I´m interested on generating OS files from honeybee in order to setup a workflow where advanced mechanical systems could be incorporated (in OS or directly over the IDF), and where all the geometry could be directly handled in Rhino-Grass. Some weeks ago, I tried to create an emodel of considerable size using OS in Sketchup and after a little bit the geometry handling became pretty messy and unstable. The implementation of the workflow is geared towards research as well as energy auditing of existing buildings.

Best!,

Alejandro

Hi Alejandro, Thank you for the reply. Sounds great! I just wanted to make sure that you know about Chien Si's development on bringing OS advanced HVAC system to Grasshopper. Your feedback on his work would be invaluable for us. Cheers, -Mostapha

Hi again Mostapha,

I´m really not familiar with the work of Chien Si in regards to bringing the OS advanced systems to Grasshopper, I read recently that OS results can now be read in GH, is Chien Si´s work related to setting up the systems directly in GH to avoid touching OS at all?

I would be happy to test drive some of Chien Si´s components and give you some feedback.

Cheers,

Alejandro

Hi Alejandro, I will send the introduction email soon. Jeff is already in touch with Chien Si so you may also want him to make the connection. Cheers, -Mostapha

Awesome, looking forward for it!

...a note in case any fellow honeybee user goes through the same issue with Grizzly Bear. The solution was to unblock the gbXML files saved in the drive C:

Oops, sorry I put my extra note about Grizzly Bear in the wrong place...

I´ll create a new discussion note for it.

Hi Alejandro-

After a number of milestones and improvements, I am about to release a number of videos on how to use OpenStudio to conduct more advanced HVAC simulations in Honeybee, which I hope will be of value to you this year.  I'll make sure that you get a notice of the videos, if Mostapha doesn't send out something first.

Hi Chien,

Thanks for letting me know, yes please let me know when you release those videos.

Right now I´m trying some of the components, watching the videos will allow me to be more concise with the feedback I could give you.

Best!,

Alejandro

Hi Chien,

First of all I'd like to say thanks for the videos! Very educational and well made.

I managed to run a few simulations on a quite complicated model very fast using your videos.

I was wondering if there are more coming (as you can imagine no amount of new exciting knowledge is enough for us!). Of course, I realize that, much like Mostapha and Chris, this is out of your free time.

I wonder if I can put some odd questions here (warning: might be dumb).

- Is it possible to have non airconditioned spaces within the model? I tried bypassing the OS Systems component and link directly to the simulation component but that only applied ideal air loads to the zones.

- Is it possible to have multiple systems within the same model? If yes, should I just use multiple OS Systems and PlantDesigner components for each system?

- If I want to model multiple (e.g. 3) AHU for one floor, should I also use 3x AHU components and link the zones that each unit is supplying air too (duh)? Or will that not really improve accuracy of design.

- Is it possible to have just mechanical ventilation and not aircondition systems (e.g. Warehouse spaces)? If yes, do I just leave the plant details empty?

Thanks in advance for any response.

Wish you good luck with your research! And thanks for your work!

Kind regards,

Theodore.

Hi Theodoros,

I probably can help you with questions 1, 2 but for 3 and 4 you should wait for Chien Si.

Is it possible to have non airconditioned spaces within the model? I tried bypassing the OS Systems component and link directly to the simulation component but that only applied ideal air loads to the zones.

Yes. You need to set isConditioned to False and also bypass the systems as you mentioned.

Is it possible to have multiple systems within the same model? If yes, should I just use multiple OS Systems and PlantDesigner components for each system?

Yes. Just pass different zones from different components and assign the desired system to the zone.

Mostapha
