algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi guys!

So I have an intersecting mobius strip and I am trying to unroll this into a straight rectangular surface that has the same u and v domain, which I will use to punch holes through and remap it on the mobius strip.

What step should I take to make the surface into a regular grid so that it can unroll into a rectangle than a curved surface.

I was trying to deconstruct the domain of the surface and create a new surface with a controlled domain, but I have no idea what to do next.

I did it in a different way but I think this is better!

Thanks!

Looking at it further, I'm pretty sure it isn't correct...  I've tried a few variations and am seeing some weird stuff.  Cool project though!

Do you really need to unroll it?  Maybe you can cut the holes in the twisted surface?

There appears to be a discontinuity where the ends meet?

Looking at other Möbius strip efforts in GH...

Sorry I didn't know having multiple threads will be a problem. I just had a new thread because I solved what I asked for on this thread so I thought creating a new one would make sense.

Anyways yea I think the unrolled surface you made for me is incorrect length wise. So I am using what I had previously, but I am having trouble with it where the circles don't get mapped the way I wanted to.

It seems like the vertical part where the start and end of the unrolled strip meet has a longer distance between two circles than the other parts. I calculated the start point of the array of circles so that  it starts at half length of the distance between two circles so that the start and end meet and make the right distance between each other.

This isn't easy!  I tried making the Möbius strip 3D (w/ thickness), like in your image, but can't figure out how to cut holes in it (colored cylinders).  'Sweep 1' failed horribly (upper left) but 'Loft' looks pretty good, though still a slight discontinuity where end returns to beginning...

Not sure what else to do except forget thickness and go back to 'Map Srf', though I'm not sure I have to unroll before creating a surface with holes...

P.S.  Thanks for sticking to one thread; can you re-post your code from the other thread to this one?

Can you help me out making a flat one without any thickness? I would prefer using the unroll method for this project.

And here are the codes

Something like this

I would prefer using the copy trim component for remapping the unrolled surface to the mobius strip

This looks great!  (yours, below)  What's the problem?  Holes are egg shaped instead of round?  Have you played around with params to change sizes, number of holes?  Your original image has 27 holes and a larger radius for the strip, relative to holes diameter.

No this is just an image I found

The holes are still at the wrong spot because for some reason, the start and end part of the strip has a longer distance between the two holes than the other parts
