Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Does anyone know of a grasshopper patch that will nest 2d geometries for optimal area usage?
basically an alternative to rhinonest 295€

No such luck. If I remember correctly from previous discussions creating an algorithm for nesting is not a trivial matter.
You can find a very basic nesting algorithm at www.rhinoscript.org.
I see something called "Object Arranger" but nothing named "Nesting"...
not the answer you are looking for but I can say that RhinoNEST is worth every penny. They have turned RhinoNEST into a very usable, easy, and stable product. They are very open to used feedback and are really involved in their user base community as far as feedback, wishes, and fixing bugs quick.

(I don't work for them, but I have been a user since 1.0. Then it was a crippled plugin that worked sometimes and seemed to be left out to pasture, when they started on 2.0 they started fresh and have backed the product up with great customer service/support.)

If you do happen to come across something GH related, please report back, I'd love to see it.

But really, for the price, RhinoNEST is a great deal if you do a lot of nesting like we do.
i'm waiting for Galapagos to be released with Grasshopper and try this out: randomly move or place objects to find smallest 2d bounding box area and minimum "intersections". i hope David can release Galapagos soon.
