Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

hi there!

I need to divide a surface randomly using 5 different panels with fix dimensions, example:

panel1 50*40 cm

panel2 30*20 cm

panel3 70*150 cm

etc...

panels dimension is not important, but I need at least 5 different panels with a random organization on the surface,it's not my case, because I have funny dimensions, but ideally could work on a square grid.

any idea?

A surface with holes in it?  An important detail implied in your images but not in your description.

How about doing a minimal amount of GH work yourself, such as supplying a surface with holes in it and the list of "panels" (surfaces) to be used?

You might also try a forum search in the sidebar for "rectangle packing".

yes sorry, the holes are a big constraint.

what you suggest is exactly what I did, almost 70% gh and the rest manually adapted, I am just curios about the possibility to optimize the workflow in grassshopper reducing the amount of ''dirty job'' in rhino.

thanks for the input!

What I'm trying to say is that you have a better chance of getting a response on this forum if you provide some code/data to work with.  Otherwise, anyone who wants to play has to start from scratch.
