Hi Paul, here is my throw(s) at it. Note: I assumed the polylines would all be closed and planar, which might not be the case in your situation. Hope this helps anyway. (just noticed you wrote rectangular instead of square)

with odd number a true/false pattern is enough, but with even number I cannot find the rule because every time I should cull a different index. best

I used the sine or cosine fuctions ( parameters : amplifier and distance ) to control the density but it is possible to use custom curve profiles.
