ield I had to use some different jumper settings as if I wanted to use the conceptinetics DMX library.
To send a chanel and a value I had to send a string from grasshopper like 001c255w to send the highest DMX value to chanel 1. See description in my code below:
/*jumper setup for Conceptinetics DMX shield:1st jumper to the right: "EN_"2nd jumper to the right: "DE"3rd jumper to the left: "TX-io"4th jumper to the left: "RX-io"
this jumper setup allows the shield to do the following actions without having to change any jumper:- transfer this arduino sketch to the arduino board- receive data from the serial port (grasshopper)- send data to a DMX device
<number>c : Select DMX channel<number>v : Set DMX channel to new value
These can be combined:001c255w002c0w003c0w --> Set channel 1 to value 255 and channel 2 and 3 to value 0.it is important that the channels are being addressed with 3 digits (001c instead of 1c)
http://dmxshield.blogspot.de/ http://playground.arduino.cc/Learning/DMX http://code.google.com/p/tinkerit/wiki/SerialToDmx http://groups.google.com/group/dmxsimple */
#include <DmxSimple.h>
void setup() { Serial.begin(9600); Serial.println("SerialToDmx ready"); Serial.println(); digitalWrite (2, HIGH);}int value = 0;int channel;void loop() { int c; while(!Serial.available()); c = Serial.read(); if ((c>='0') && (c<='9')) { value = 10*value + c - '0'; } else { if (c=='c') channel = value; else if (c=='w') { DmxSimple.write(channel, value); } value = 0; }}

stributes structural supports for a uniformly loaded domain using e.g. the internal energy of the loaded domain as fitness. Here the uniformly loaded domain is represented by the trimmed surface. My genomes are the support positions (green crosses), which are restricted to a set of predefined grid points. I’m currently using an (i,j)-coordinate indexing for these grid points (illustrated in the viewport just below) as opposed to a sequential , “one-dimensional” numbering (illustrated in the viewport further down).
(i,j)-indexing systemAltenative, sequential indexing system
The support positions are computed by two gene pools; one governing the i-index, Gene List {i}, and one governing the j-index, Gene List {j}, of each support. The value of slider 0 in Gene List {i} is paired with the value of slider 0 in Gene List {j} etc. and the amount of sliders corresponds to the amount of supports. The screen shot below depicts the slider constellation corresponding to the support distribution depicted above. Unfortunately the j-index represented in the sliders needs remapping as the number of j-indices vary for each i-index (horizontal row of grid points). With the current setup I have 12^6 x 9^6 = 1,6 x 10^12 different genomes. If I were to use the sequential, “one-dimensional” numbering, I would only use one gene pool with sliders ranging from 0 to 76 meaning that remapping could be avoided and thereby having only 76^6 = 1,9 x 10^11 different genomes.
So, my current genome setup causes a bunch of issues related to the Evolutionary Solver: Remapping Changing one of the j-index sliders, will not necessarily change the related support position but it will still facilitate another genome to be calculated by the solver. (This problem could be eliminated by using the sequential, “one-dimensional” numbering)
Switching slider values around If the values of e.g. slider 0 were to be switched around with the values of slider 5, this again would yield a new genome but an identical solution. (This problem cannot be eliminated by using the sequential, “one-dimensional” numbering)
Coincident support positions Two or more supports may be located in the same position. (This problem cannot be eliminated by using the sequential, “one-dimensional” numbering)
I find it impossible to imagine the fictive “fitness landscape” of this problem and not only because of the multidimensional genome characteristic but just as much because of these listed, intertwined peculiarities. I’ve tried running the Simulated Annealing Solver as well, but my experience is that the Evolutionary Solver yields better results. To my awareness, the solver uses some kind of topographical proximity searcher. This is why, I think that the solving process itself benefits more from analysing the (i,j)-index system, in which neighbouring grid points hold more uniform topographical information than the sequential, “one-dimensional” numbering, which might have big ID-numbering gaps between neighbours. Have I understood this correctly?
Cheers…

After this, a new window inside Grasshopper appears, with following message:
Component ExceptionAnalysis [Analysis]An exception was thrown during a solution:Component: Analysisc_UUID: aa901e22-c085-45da-820d-9728d9ff0252c_POS: {X=1028, Y=592}Das Objekt des Typs "Karamba.support" kann nicht in Typ "Karamba.GH_Beam" umgewandelt werden.
What seems to be the problem? My Grasshopper or Karamba versions are too new for this files?
I am using Rhino SR8, Grasshopper 0.8.0010, Karamba 0.9.06
I did not have Karamba before on this PC, this is the first time I installed it on this one. But I had Karamba about 5 months ago on different PC and on that one, these two .3dm and .ghx files worked without problems. You can download both files from here:
http://www.gamefront.com/files/20530681/karamba_test04.rar
So what is the problem?
Thank you for all the help.

s will learn to use these extensions in order to integrate numerous tools for analysis and simulation in the architectural process.
This course aims to develop a link between the virtual and the real context model through structural or environmental simulations, using other software or plug-ins dedicated. Through this link the virtual model receives physical properties that can further modify and adapt the initial model. This creates feedback loops that can optimize the design to provide an object responsive to environmental conditions.
Curriculum
Mesh subdivision with Weaverbird, continuous surfaces without NURBS
Genetic optimization with Galapagos, optimal search
Physical environment feedback with Diva and Geco, solar and day lighting analysis
Adding physical properties with Kangaroo Physics, interactive form-finding
Linking the parametric model with structural analysis using Karamba, structural performance simulation
Extracting data with Firefly and Kinect, 3D scanning and human movement tracking
Exchange of information between Grasshopper and other applications with Ghowl links to internet feeds or Excel files.

her bump on the road. I've evolved the original idea into something that remotely resembles this childish doodle:
That is, 3 different rows of panels with fixed heights but random widths. Each panel will be perforated in voronoi patterns that vary according to my original sun intensity diagram, but I'm thinking they'll have a fixed frame width and a small gap between them, kinda like this other childish doodle:
I've mastered the method of turning my original diagram into a voronoi panel that's denser where the sun hits harder thanks to Vicente's method. But it gives the voronoi frames a width by scaling each cell by .9, but that doesn't yield frames with constant width... which is fine for my 3D, but I wanna use the files to draw diagrams for laser cutting and actual building of the panels, so I guess I can't be too precise there.
Again thanks for all the useful (and funny) input! :)

hange at regular intervals along the length in such a way that at each interval the order of strands is completely unique, until the system comes full circle.
The rule established to create this pattern is shown in the attached excel file. It's clearer that way.System%20rule.xlsx
All I'm looking to achieve here is something to get me started. I don't need to completely recreate the system with all its complexities. (E.g. strands from one group crossing over strands of lower rank groups to get to their new groups...)
I feel like I need to be using lists to divide a set of curves and then rearrange them according to a pattern, but I'm not sure how to do that and I also have no idea how I could use the rearrangement of data to actually rearrange the geometry... Any thoughts on how to tackle this?
Here are some photos of the model:
Thanks in advance!…
ou will see all of the available components on a ribbon at once so there is no need to keep clicking drop down menus.
It's all about discoverability with GH. What if you're a beginner and don't know about the Create Facility (dbl click canvas) how can you find Extr?
Even if you hover over every component or use the drop down lists you will not see the name Extr appear anywhere.
Sure it makes sense that Extr is short for Extrude but it's also the Nick Name of Extrude to Point component
So you can easily miss the fact that one has a Distance Input verses a Point Input.
I think I made the move to Icons around about the move from version 0.5 to 0.6, possibly before. I initially thought that I would go back to text because I loved the mono chromatic look of the text but I soon realised that Icons were the way forward. The greatest benefit is speed. You don't need to digest and decipher every component (which is written 90 degrees to the norm).
I'm not saying you should move to Icons forthwith but at least consider that once you have a better knowledge and understanding of GH, Icons will set you free.
My top ten tips that I would highly recommend to anyone wanting to better themselves with GH.
1) Turn on Draw Icons
2) Turn on Draw Fancy Wires
3) Turn on Obscure Components
4) Use the Create Facility like a Command Line eg "Slider=-1<0.75<2" or "Shiftlist=-1"
5) Use Component Aliases to customise your use of the Create Facility eg giving the Point XYZ component an alias of XYZ will bring it up as the first option on the Create Facility as opposed to the other possibilities.
6) Try to answer other people's questions even if it's not relevant to your own area. By looking into solving a problem outside of your comfort zone and then posting your results it is very rewarding but it also lets you see the other approaches that get posted in a new light.
7) Take the time to understand Data/Path structures.
8) Buy a second monitor - There is nothing that can compare to real estate when working in Grasshopper.
9) Read Rajaa Issa's Essential Mathematics
10) Pick a panel in a tab on the ribbon and get to know every component inside and out and then move on. Start with the Sets Tab > List Panel…
