Hi Patricio, if you flatten the 'Elem'-input at the 'Assemble'-component the definition works. The triangular shell elements have linear displacement interpolations whereas the beam deflections are exact. In order to get correct results you should refine the shell mesh.

I was doing a rough estimate of the deformation, and I can not achieve the same result with Karamba. When I make a rough estimate of the result with Karamba beams and mine are very similar, I think the problem is when I connect the shell, because there are no similar results.

Dear Patricio,
try to increase the number of shell elements. As mentioned in the manual they are linear elements. A mesh that is too coarse leads to a response which is stiffer than the real structure.

vid Rutten (the creator of Grasshopper) as the leading poster. Amassing just over 7000 posts. I have been a regular contributor since this forum starter 5 years ago and I am only half way there.
The line between "the only stupid question is the unasked question" and the "why is no one here answering my questions question" needs to be walked with care.
We have all been where you are now. Admittedly it was probably easier for me as there wasn't that much to the program when I started using it and my learning curve has been an incremental one as things get added.
It doesn't help that all the documentation that is around is out of date as soon as it gets published, but that is the nature of software in BETA... things change. I know of a concerted effort by the powers to be to document Grasshopper better. But this is a little way of from completion.
If it helps I can think of two examples of questions that I either should have asked or did and regretted.
Firstly I had no idea you could bake geometry into the rhino document when I first used Explicit History (former name of GH) I mean what the hell does a fried egg have to do with it :) so I simply ignored the plug-in for a month or so. If I'd asked how do I get my Red transparent surfaces into Rhino, I would have been using it a lot sooner.
Secondly I wished for a way to display the output of a component so that I could see it without having to hover over the tool tip each time. I didn't realise that Post-it Note (or Panel as it is now due to copyright issues) had an input as well as an output.
The most important thing to remember is that Grasshopper is an extension of Rhino. By not knowing Rhino you are at a greater disadvantage than the rest.
If you don't know how you should go about modelling something in Rhino how are you going to be able to develop meaningful algorithms in Grasshopper.

The PC actually stops working because after a few seconds the simulation starts the fan inside the PC all of a sudden stops and for the next 5-10 mins I cannot do anything, even alt+ctrl+canc. After I wait for that time i get the followig error:

It's a direction for Kangaroo I very much intend to continue developing - and I am still getting to grips with the possibilities and experimenting with how different optimization and fairing forces work in combination with one another, so I would value your input and experience.

At the moment the Laplacian smoothing is uniformly weighted, which tends to even out the edge lengths as well as smoothing the form, which is sometimes desirable, and sometimes not. It also tends to significantly shrink meshes when the edges are not fixed.
I plan to try some of the other weighting possibilities, such as Fujiwara or cotangent weighting (see [1] and [3]), as well as other fairing approaches, such as Taubin smoothing [2], Willmore flow[4], and so on. This also has applications in the simulation of bending of thin shells.
Planar quad panels are often desirable, but I'm finding that planarization forces alone are sometimes unstable, or cause undesirable crumpling, so need to be combined with some sort of fairing/smoothing, but the different types have quite different effects, and the balance is sometimes tricky.
There's also the whole issue of meshes which are circular (I posted a demo of circularization on the examples page), or conical (this one still isn't working quite right yet), and their relationship with principal curvature grids and placement of irregular vertices, all of which is rather different when the whole form is up for change, rather than having a fixed target surface [7].
I'm also trying to get to grips with ways of making surfaces of planar hexagons, which need to become concave in regions of negative Gaussian curvature (see this discussion)
and I hope to release soon a component for calculating CP meshes, as described in [8], which I think could have many exciting construction implications.
While there are a number of well developed smoothing algorithms, their main area of application so far seems to be in processing and improving 3D scan data, so using them in design in this way is somewhat new territory. There can be structural, fabrication or performance reasons for certain types of smoothness, but of course the aesthetic reasons are also often important, and I think there are some interesting discussions to be had here about the aesthetics of smoothness.
Anyway, that's enough rambling from me, hopefully something there triggers some discussion - I'm really keen to hear about how all of you envision these tools might be used and developed.

ow much space that combination would take (according to London Design Guidelines). So for the example above, a 3/6/9/2 combination takes up 1219 square metres.
It's true I am storing very weird combinations of units (35/0/0/0 for example, a residential block made only of studios...), but a priori I don't know if it might come in handy one day!
Once I have that calculation done, which doesn't apply to any specific project, I "evaluate" it for a specific project. I have various floorplates of different sizes, so I go through my index looking for good matches (those which are close enough in area) - and here is where I need a recorder, but one that traps only the good results, and only gets better as it reads through the file.
After that, I lay the units onto the floorplate and evaluate how good the solutions I have found are (the usual suspects; orientation, sun exposure, cross-ventilation, etc.). I might need Galapagos for this, but the fact remains I need to cull a huge pool of 33M possible combinations into (say) 100. Hence my need for a recorder.
It would be great to read your thesis actually! If you would be so kind as to share, always looking for different ways of approaching the solution.…
