mple problem.
Imagine you're dividing a space (100m²) into two rooms, one of which (room A) should be 60m², the other (room B) 40m². Now it follows that the sum of both rooms must always add up to 100m². And if you make one room smaller by 5m², the other one gets bigger by 5m².
The simplest expression that would convert room areas into a fitness value is, I think:
Abs(A - 40) + Abs(B - 60)
or, in English, the sum total of the discrepancies between the actual areas and the desired areas.
If the rooms are both 50m² we get a fitness of:
Abs(50-40) + Abs(50-60) = 20
If room A equals 10m² and room B equals 90m², we get:
Abs(10-40) + Abs(90-60) = 60
If both rooms are exactly right, we get:
Abs(40-40) + Abs(60-60) = 0
So the point here is to minimize fitness, and once the fitness has reached zero we know we're home free.
But this is a very straightforward case. What if we're trying to optimize a problem, while knowing there's no way on Earth we'll be able to solve all constraints? This is after all what Evolutionary solvers are good at. So what if the problem is not as clear cut?
This time try to imagine we want every room to be 50m², but all the rooms are too small. Let's write down three cases like before:
(Room A = 30m², Room B = 40m²)
Abs(30 - 50) + Abs(40 - 50) = 30
(Room A = 35m², Room B = 35m²)
Abs(35 - 50) + Abs(35 - 50) = 30
(Room A = 25m², Room B = 45m²)
Abs(25 - 50) + Abs(45 - 50) = 30
Holy Crap! They're all the same! Well this is no good, it's like three bald men fighting over a comb. Even though all solutions fail to meet constraints, they certainly shouldn't all be equally fit. Let's assume for the time being we'd rather have both rooms fail to meet demands in equal amounts instead of one room being ok-ish and the other being way off. How can we add this assumption to the fitness function?
Basically we need to exaggerate large departures from the ideal and trivialize small departures. Our naive fitness function was linear, our new and improved fitness function must be non-linear. The simplest non-linear function is the parabola (x²). So let's see where that gets us.
Abs(30 - 50)² + Abs(40 - 50)² = 500
Abs(35 - 50)² + Abs(35 - 50)² = 450
Abs(25 - 50)² + Abs(45 - 50)² = 650
Phew... The case where both room fail to meet demands equally has the lowest value (and thus the highest fitness) whereas the most extreme discrepancy has the highest value (and thus the lowest fitness).
This approach is called Least Squares fitting and it's one of the most common fitting algorithms in statistics.
Whether you decide to weigh your competing factors equally or differently, and whether you decide to treat deviations linearly or non-linearly is entirely up to you. It requires you have a decent understanding of the problem at hand and also a decent understanding of the mathematical behaviour of the fitness function.

lite’ of education that promotes the Architectural Association’s exclusive, intensive form of teaching and learning around the country. AA Greece VS aims on visiting a different city each year and construct a single large-scale model which will act as an active nod of communication among the various locations.
In 2014, the School will initiate its design agenda with an architectural approach that is focused on the aspect of connection. The city of Patras which is the starting node of AA Greece VS, was chosen by the European Commission to be the European Capital of Culture for the year 2006. The concept of the event revolved around the main theme of "Bridges" and "Dialogues", drawing benefit from the city's rich history and its position as a "Gate to the West", to underline the essence of the productive interaction of culture and civilizations in Europe. The AA Greece Visiting School investigates how well existing buildings with various sightlines and variant spatial grammars perform according to human perception. In sync with the flexible and adaptive concept of parasitical structures, the research focuses on the making of transformable large-scale creations that accentuate prominent architectural features of existing buildings. The research looks at how cultural factors, specific preferences, experiences, and expectations can lead to the transformation of architectural parasitical structures.

could represent at least three immaterial substances: his subconscious, the negative mass surrounding the sculpture and a parallel world where material is forbidden.
Has Architects' engagement with virtual space meant a vanishing sensitivity towards material and other immaterial realms?
The AA Rome Visiting School 10 day workshop encourages the observation of material elements and their use in the design of architecture featuring subconscious experiences, spatial voids and virtual communities. Students will investigate modern materials and their digital fabrication by direct experience. They will work with algorithms and sensors able to recognise and respond to human feelings and attitudes. Students will feed novel expressions of void spaces into the Roman tradition featuring examples like the ancient catacombs and the Nolli map. Through augmented reality design the projects will open a window into an digital virtual world.
By the end of the workshop students will unveil their interpretation of the material/immaterial form hidden in the real matter.

er" logic but it miss when comes the copy or offset.
Here is my following logic
Take the square of 25 m x 12 m ; make it a surface
I divide it in "blades" of 20 cm
I take the edges of the "blades",
I divide this edges in 40 points (or equivalent) (A)
I identify my curves (curves) which are on the floors, which are curves (B)
First i do this "test" :
for each crossroad between A and B, i make a circle of X cm (slider) of diameter and the rule is the following :
* In this circle, the future movement of my A curve must be at Z = 0
Second step :
for each next point, i have to : leave a copy on Z = 0 and rise the second one for a heigh of Y cm (slider) from the ground.
the next (W = slider to chose every each number of point, i decide to do the following point) point, which is a little bit farer from the previous point, must duplicate the same height of Y ; and also be copied to Y + Y cm.
There is a Z number (slider) which is the max height possible for these points, which mean that the next point must be at this very same level except ... The third step scenario.
The purpose is to be able to have flat area, like step in a stairway.
Third step :
The grasshopper must test if the A points are between two or more "area at Z = 0". Why ?
The goal is to obtain something like screen "side view" if there are two starting points at Z = 0.
Which also mean that if there is an odd number of points, the remaining odd number must be at the top of the "stairs"
At this point of the grasshopper, we might be able to obtain, thanks to the sliders the "staircase form" regarding :
- The size of the test circle between A and B curves
- The "footstep" of each points (height)
- The number of points before a "copy of the point + the next footstep rise"
- The max heigh possible for all the point off B curves
And at this moment i have a new problem in my logic. You will get my idea, but it might be wrong as well...
Therefore, and after that, we should be able to link every point by a straight line.
To fillet with P (angle) a line with the following one
To join all the line of a same B curve
To cut it at the center of each circle at Z = 0 (the crossroad of A and B)
To offset it with Q (distance)
To rise a line from the center of each circle at Z = 0
To cut the extra part of each Offset"ed" curve to get an offset curve "aligned in Z" with the original one.
To create loft the original and offset"ed" one
To extrude the surface to a distance of R
And grasshopper "should be done" because, i will duplicate it for the ceiling, reverse the form with a -Z vector to the Y value and modifie my Z in Z' to modify my max height
Could you help me ?

ra Designer Pro 6, but Xara is pretty good at file compatibility so you can probably open them on many versions.
You are free to use and modify these vector graphics for any project, document or webpage that is associated with Grasshopper. You do not need to credit me, though it is not allowed to pass the work off as your own without modifications.
There are no fast and hard rules when it comes to the graphics style of Grasshopper icons, but I suggest you try and mimic line-weights, contrast, saturation and arrow and point symbols when designing your own icons.
Note that all icons must be 24x24 pixels and most icons in the original set leave a 2-pixel empty border around all edges. All icons with such an empty border have a drop-shadow with the following properties:
Blur = 2 pixels
Colour = black
Transparency = 65 out of 255 (roughly 25%)
Horizontal offset = 1 pixel to the right
Vertical offset = 1 pixel downwards
I apply drop-shadows as a post-process effect in a pixel-editor, as Xara is not good at pixel effects on very small images.

with Istanbul Technical University, will continue to rediscover verticality through novel generative design techniques and large-scale physical prototypes. Abstracted as a fusion of various sub-systems, each subsystem of the tower will be investigated in relation to their various performance criteria. The correlations between the separate sets of performance criteria and evaluation methods will be analyzed, leading to the generation of unified design alternatives for a vertical system typology. In addition to the custom-made digital design and evaluation tools supporting the core methodology, Vertical Interventions will also highlight the fabrication and assembly of a large scale working prototype integrating the performative characteristics of each system in examination.
