algorithmic modeling for Rhino

This question has nothing to do with GH but is with rhino. I'm asking here because you guys are some the most helpful people I know and most of you also know how to render. This is something I've always wondered but never could figure out.

Basically I am trying to render a section cut of a building to show interior daylighting effects. My problem is how do I render so that rhino, vray, flamingo or whatever engine understands that I want it to render the sun as if the entire building is there but render the building as a section. The problem with just rendering the section cut is sunlight now indirectly enters in the spaces from the open end of the section. How do I tell rhino to render the lighting quality of the room as if it's closed (the way it is in reality) but show me the actual lighting quality but in section. This making sense? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This can change based on the rendering engine, some offer more ways of dealing with it than others, but I usually see it done with clipping planes. You can set near and far clipping planes that slice through an object, while rendering it as if the object were entirely present.

The disadvantage of using clipping planes is that they must be perpendicular to your camera angle (because they are a part of the camera frustum), which doesn't help with perspective or oblique sections.

hey thanks. Fortunately perpendicular is fine for what I need. I am a huge fan of deep perspective sections though.

yeah, what he said, maxwell can be very good for this

Render it as a true interior (i.e. enclosed on 6 sides) and then render your sectioned building with the same viewport size and resolution.  In Illustrator or Photoshop overlay the section render on the interior render, and make a clipping mask for the interior.
I was also thinking possibly building a box around me and the section.
Ive found these things tend to work better in 3ds, if you just import your model, the camera options are better I think, and its easier to understand what you will be getting from your render
