Packing different rectangles within a larger rectangle ?

Hi Guys,

An interresting question which someone has asked me and which might require galapagos maybe?... Please see image below: How would you pack as many of these three rectangular units as possible within a given larger rectangle?

i noticed people had the same issue in 3d http://www.grasshopper3d.com/forum/topics/geometrically-packing-a-v...

http://www.grasshopper3d.com/forum/topics/tetrahedron-packing-8563

and even 2d

http://www.grasshopper3d.com/forum/topics/how-to-fill-a-shape-with?...

Any more suggestion?

Thanks,

Arthur

Hi Arthur,

If it's purely for efficiency - and you don't mind the 'computer' deciding the pattern - the RhinoNest plugin does that sort of thing. I've been experimenting with it, hence it pops into mind. Very un-GH i know, but it does allow you to set the distance between objects, the angle of rotation they can achieve, and the quantity of each shape.

Apologies if that was wide of the mark for what you're really asking for...
Thanks David, i actualy never came accross the RhinoNest plugin i will have a look and post the result:)
