Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi GH community,

I'm trying to achieve this effect for my studio project, and was hoping to hear some insights on how to build it. I know attractor points, box-morphing, and panelization.

But what confuses me is how to achieve the transition a flat surface to openings.

Thanks in advance!

Is this Haresh Lalvani's artwork ?

I don't know, I pulled it off the web, but from looking at Lalvani, it seems very close to what he does.

Am I violating some sort of user agreement issue?

I just think it's good form to try and credit original artists when possible. Also, I really like the series I think this is from, but hadn't seen this particular piece before.

Anyway, to answer your original question - If you want to model something like the real physical system where the squares are the same size, then I think the best way would be using a network of springs and draping them over or pulling onto a surface.

To get just a similar visual effect you could use something like this:

Wow! That was unbelievably fast! I really want to get up to that speed with GH one day.

Thank you very much!

and by physical system I'm assuming Kangaroo right? That will be fun to try, I will give it a go!

Thanks again

really great inspiration.  I'll have to dig into his work!  here's an alternative solution to Daniel's...

credited in tags, thanks

Yes,
This is Haresh lavani's work.
What is so incredible about his work in this series is that it all begins with a single flat piece of material. It is through careful study and experimentation of two dimensional patterning and controlled force that the object takes on three dimensional form.
An excellent starting point to understand the work would be to study the relationship between, material, pattern and force. Learn lessons from the behavior of materials through methodical experimentation, then you will have a strong foundation to understand how to "program" form in grasshopper.

google image search!  I had no idea...
