Create an interconnected network from a set of curves

Hi everyone,

I basically want to create a mesh-like network from a set of curves. The curves should represent one direction, while the generated connections should become the other direction.

Now, this is easy if the curves all have the same topology, or go roughly into the same direction (picture 1). I just bring them in order, divide them and connect the points. Here, the input curves are black, and the resulting connection is grey.

However, what would happen in the second picture? I'm sure you can imagine how it should look like (since this is a magnetic diagramme of stream lines, you can guess the orthogonal connection, also called equipotential lines). It is not that easy to generate them, tho, since I can't just divide the curves and connect them with the next one in the list. What approach would you use?
