Wanted to give  a heads up to the people who were interested in this video posted by Timothy Logan

He has released (in November 2011) a set of plugins called Elk available at food4rhino.com  I've tested the components with several cities and I must say that I am impressed with the functionality it adds to grasshopper and the speed at which it resolves all of the data.  There is no group for Elk here on the gh page, but it would be nice to have eventually.  Thanks Tim!

this is really cool.
the output is well structured so it makes it very easy to it use, and it even retrieves names as well!

Hello Jacek! How did you manage to display the street names?

Each of the OSM components has a key as the last output that lists the name of each set of points. The key should be separated into branches of data based on the outputs so that the first output (top) is branch {0}, the second is {1} and so on.  So you can create a polyline from the points and place then match the text up using a text tag.

I have an updated version of the plugin that I'm working on installed, but I'll try roll back and put an example together sometime soon.

Here's an example of the street names. Just plug your own OSM file into it and it should display the street names for the primary roads.

Thanks for the feedback everyone and for spreading the word Luis.  I'll work on setting up a group and try to get the SRTM functionality added in the coming weeks, probably after the holidays.

Nice, plugin. 

But i seem to have a problem getting as a clear map as u have, with all the roads mapped. Is it because the openstreemap is incompled  in Europa or ?

Jesper, a lot of the content in OSM is user generated, like wikipedia, except wikipedia has many more years running, and have a more ambiguous task of creating an encyclopedia for everything.  OSM just needs to document the earth, but it has a long way to go.  Here is the coverage info: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Bing/Coverage

As Luis said, there's a definite possibility that the coverage isn't adequate for where you're pulling the information, but if the map looks fine when viewed on their website, then it should come through fine via Elk.  I didn't have your OSM file, but when I hooked one of my own up to it, I did see a problem with most of your polyline components being set to closed.  With maybe the exception of the Lakes output, you typically will want those to be not be closed polylines.
