Hey Elliot. Thanks for reaching out! However, it ended up being a bit of a dead end for me. My work computer had an older version of Illustrator (CC 2014 I believe) working with Rhino 5.0. This was working to a point and I was able to connect across both ways between Rhino/Illustrator fairly intuitively after using 'Show Full Names' on inputs/outputs while working in Grasshopper. I don't think Andrew currently has much free time and hasn't supported updates to it since I the user base is still fairly low. I'm afraid I don't have a solution for you. Sorry man! 
If you feel so compelled, check out getting your hands on the Illustrator SDK and maybe you could assist in building doodlebug further!
