Not to disappoint everybody, but the actual unrolling was not done in grasshopper, I simply animated the blend between the two surfaces in GH, and used Rhino for the unrolling.

just used the built in slider "animate" function to export frames — two different definitions for the tracing of the form and the unrolling. Made into a movie with quicktime pro.
