Turning a 3 dimensional curve into a developable surface that will unroll to a straight strip.

Hi,Let me begin by thanking you for taking the time to read this.I am trying to figure out how to turn a 3d curve into a developable surface that if unrolled would be a straight strip. Essentially I…Continue

"Hi Enda, Thanks - that is more clear now. Finding a developable strip through a given curve should be possible, either with Kangaroo or through geometric construction. However, I think in general it will not be possible for this developable strip to…"

"Hi Daniel, Thanks for getting back to me. Ultimately my goal is to figure out how a straight piece of paper would follow the curve I have. I plan on using this to make a template that will allow me to make the piece out of wood…"

"Hi Enda, What is the intended end result here? There are multiple instances of the Kangaroo solver in one definition, which I would generally avoid where possible, and it is often possible to combine the goals into a single simulation. Even in…"

Pull mesh to curve

Hi guys,I'm stuck on something and I was hoping someone might be able to help. I am trying to pull a mesh strip to a curve. I started by segmenting the curve into equal lengths using Daniel's equalise segments definition from a previous discussion. I then created a mesh the same length with the same number of segments and now I want to wrap that mesh along the curve using the segment control points.I have tried the magnet snap which seems to be trying to bring the points together when I grab…See More

"Hi Daniel, Thanks for your response. I didn't actually realise that the intersection point would be shown by a cylinder. Thanks. What I am actually trying to do is form a surface along a curve that demonstrates the behaviour of paper (or in…"

"Hi Bruno, Thanks for getting back to me and for helping. I just took a look at the attachment. The problem with always having the edges intersecting is that as you adjust the parameters it alters the axis of rotation from 2-3. Rather what I need is…"

Surface rotation

Hi guys,I'm hoping someone can help. I have a series of intersecting surfaces that are the same width. What i'm trying to do is rotate each surface around its centre line axis until the edges of both surfaces intersect which will only happen when the angles are supplementary. I can rotate them manually which gets me pretty close but I have over a thousand to do so it would be great if there was a formula for it.I have attached a rhino file that shows two intersecting surfaces as an example of…See More

Turning a 3 dimensional curve into a developable surface that will unroll to a straight strip.

Hi,Let me begin by thanking you for taking the time to read this.I am trying to figure out how to turn a 3d curve into a developable surface that if unrolled would be a straight strip. Essentially I am looking for something along the lines of Marten Nettelbladt's Tapeworm definition but I already have the curve that I want, now I need to create a surface using the curve as my centre line. I have tried various attempts to loft and sweep but as of yet have been unable to come up with a definition…See More
