Welcome!

Thanks for checking out the Finches Components Group. Please post questions here.

These Grasshopper components are being developed to allow others to utilize the workflow created for the Local Code Project, an urban design research initiative led by Nicholas de Monchaux at the UC Berkeley Department of Architecture. All of the work is released under a Creative Commons Attribution – NonCommercial – ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License. Stay tuned for additional features and information coming soon.

Our components are named "Finches" in honor of the variety and place-based differentiation of finch populations in the Galapagos islands noted by Charles Darwin, and in keeping with the trend of naming plugins after fauna. Because these components focus on sets of models, rather than singular instances, we felt it was appropriate to use the plural "finches" rather than "finch." Of course this is also meant as an acknowledgement of David Rutten's work developing Grasshopper.

"It is very remarkable that a nearly perfect gradation of structure in this one group can be traced in the form of the beak, from one exceeding in dimensions that of the largest gros-beak, to another differing but little from that of a warbler... Seeing this gradation and diversity of structure in one small, intimately related group of birds, one might really fancy that from an original paucity of birds in this archipelago, one species had been taken and modified for different ends"

--Charles Darwin, Journal of researches into the natural history and geology of the countries visited during the voyage of H.M.S. Beagle round the world, under the Command of Capt. Fitz Roy, R.N. (2d edition, London: John Murray, 1845). p. 379-80
