Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi all!

Something weird happened to me just now.

I've been working on a GH file that has 2 or 3 days old, with successive savings and re-openings in the last days with no problem.

Yesterday I worked on it with multiple saves and AutoSaves (I checked GH messages) during the day and I went to sleep after saving again GH and Rhino and shutting down everything.

Today I opened the Rhino and GH files and GH file doesn't have the latest changes I made yesterday, although the file says it was saved at July 19th at 2.55 am!!

My deadline is tomorrow!! Can anyone help me?

Thanks!

Do you already check, \AppData\Roaming\Grasshopper\AutoSave on your pc ?! the file should be there.

Yes, I checked, but there is none.

GH deletes autosave files after saving is done. What I don't understand is once I saved it and the file says it was last modified at 2.55am today, why is it not up to date?

It seems that it misses everything I did yesterday!

It sounds strange, at least for me. When you open the file it allows you to choose the recovery file ?!

No, it doesn't ask for anything, it simply opens the file, but without yesterday's modifications..

It really is strange! I hope David Rutten can explain this!

Heads up! When such a s*t happens I always say to myself that i've got +500 points of experience and must do the work better!

Back in 80s Peter Norton said - Make more backups. Years of PC work experience and lots of lost forever files have taught me to save important files twice as minimum in different folders and always using incremental save. Never save your files over your current working file. Every application may have problems overwriting working files. It's much more secure when the app. defines a special place on hard drive for a new file.

Good luck! never trust computers!

For example, you have a file "A", and an autosave file "B" which is the same (as "A") but in a previous progress. That is, both have the same name.
If you open B, and the autosave was activates, then the A file will be replaced with the file B and you've lost the current progress.
It could have happened?
Anyway, I'm afraid you'll have to do it all again, sorry :/

That would be true, if I have opened an autosave file, which I didn't because GH never advised me on that. After all, I did save the file previously, and that's why GH didn't alert there was an autosaved file, because it deletes any autosaved file if the main file is properly saved.

Maybe if this didn't happened would be nice, so that we could always have access to previous autosaved versions of the files. Or there could be a way to save backup files automatically, instead of having to click on 'Save Backup File', that would be great!!

Anyway, I already started re-doing everything, but it still sucks!

Thanks for the replies, though! ;)
