algorithmic modeling for Rhino
Hi Everyone,
I keep trying different tools in Grasshopper and I never see modified file in updated in render. Does this mean file not actually modified? Am I missing something?
I've looked through a number of tutorials and still have not figured this out. I have added a sample image to illustrate. Any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Brent

Hi Brent,
Grasshopper geometry doesn't exist as far as Rhino is concerned. Grasshopper maintains its own geometry data structures and draws those shapes into the Rhino viewports when Rhino is not looking.
You'll have to 'bake' your Grasshopper geometry into the Rhino document if you want to render them. You can use the Insert key when you have selected the components to bake, or use the Bake menu items. Alternatively, you can use the Geometry Cache object for this.
Also note there are some 3rd party plugins for Grasshopper that automate baking. I think they allow layer and material and colour properties as well.

Hi David,
Thank you for prompt response and information. Much clearer now. Getting some interesting stuff now. Loving the program more each time. =-)
I have also been selecting all and right click to bake - seems to render fine also. Does using the latter method provide any pitfalls or different results compared to insert and geometry cache?
Regards,
Brent
Insert is just a shortcut for Bake. It avoids the window with layer and grouping properties and such. Geometry Cache might be useful because it replaces existing baked data, so you don't have to manually remove old baked stuff before baking new stuff.

David,
Thank you for this clarification. I'll definitely use these tools.
