How to control modules movement in micro-scale?

Hi all:

Currently I have a surface that I can control its movement (sliding & rotation) in the macro-scale.  I wonder if there are any ways I can control the movement in micro-scale such as only a portion of surface slides or rotates to create wider openings and or to create complexity in sections.
