Med Mart 3: Solaaaatubes!

We're taking a short break from unpacking the design process for the Cleveland Medical Mart facade and have a new post focusing on the lighting studies we did for the central atrium.  Radiance, Grasshopper, and Exposure (3DSMAX) were all used to design and test various skylight configurations.  Rather than using a handful of huge skylights there…

Med Mart 2: Panel Texture and Geometry

The last post we shared look at how we used Grasshopper to layout panels for the facade of the Cleveland Medical Mart.  This post looks at the geometry and texture of those panels.  The beauty of using Grasshopper was that we were able to explore lots of iterations, almost too many.  The interesting thing this does is to initially focus the design discussions on…

Med Mart 1: Generation of Facade Geometry

This is the second post describing our design process for the Cleveland Medical Mart.  Grasshopper was a critical tool in the development and documentation of this project and we're hoping to share a bit of what we learned along the way.

For more info follow the…

Cleveland Medical Mart

We're finally able to share some projected related work!  This link is to the first in a series of post that will describe LMNts involvement in the design of the Cleveland Medical Mart.

In February of 2010, a joint partnership between Merchandise Mart…

3D printing flexible grids

Recently I've been playing with draping uniform grids onto surfaces using Kangaroo.  I find it fascinating to see the way different grid types (hexagonal, triangular, rectangular) conform to various surfaces.  I wanted to share this interest with non Grasshopper users in our office so I printed a couple flexible grids out and let people play with them.

For…

CNC Model Base

Over the course of the next month or so we'll be rolling a few posts which describe our design process for the panelization and texturing of a doubly curved feature wall.  The project is still in design development so we're not allowed to share everything at this point, but we can share our recent efforts to build a physical model for lighting studies. Follow the link to read more about our use of the 3d printer + CNC router in modeling process.

LMN GH Holiday Card

Any more we find ourselves using Grasshopper for just about everything including our holiday card for 2010.  We received a lot of positive response to the card so we thought we would share how we made our glow flakes.

Stage Lighting with LEDs, GH, Firefly and Arduino

We've really been enjoying playing with Firefly and Arduino lately. Many thanks to the Firefly development team! It's helping get physical computing to catch on amongst those designers who are already using Grasshopper. It's going to be fun to watch Firefly develop...

We recently built a 1:24 scale model of a studio theater. The design team did a great job building the model, but it was so seamless… Continue

Sightlines and View Obstructions

We are developing a Grasshopper definition that takes any potential

point of view and simulates what areas on the stage would be blocked

from view. A slider controls which seat is analyzed and Rhino's camera

orientation and location are also adjusted to the selected seat. The

definition can also be used to compare the quality of view from all of

the seats by coloring the heads according to which ones have the

clearest view versus those with the highest number… Continue
