How are you getting the initial points?

Are you using the 2d metaball component at different parallel planes and then dividing the resulting polylines by length?

Looking good.

It could be interesting to combine this with the kind of iterative remeshing I wrote about here, which is good for adapting quickly to changing shapes and maintaining nice triangles, but doesn't handle global topology changes (like blobs merging or splitting), whereas the ball pivoting does.

Frequent split/flip/collapse type remeshing could be combined with occasional global ball pivot meshing of the vertices to handle topology changes...
