a machine that is light and very sturdy. I have taken my Macbook Pro all around the world, carry it with me every day, even dropped it a few times and its still totally fine. Its thin and light.
2) You get some actual support for your hardware even a few years down the line. My Macbook Pro is from 2012 and I can still walk in to any Apple Store and get help with it, which I have done many, many times in different places around the world - I never had to show a receipt or was charged any money for help. There is no PC/Laptop manufacturer in the world with anything close to that, because companies like Asus, Dell, etc. bring out dozens of new versions of laptops every year, so its much harder to service them after a few years.
3) This is the most important one, which usually people forget when they say that Macbooks are overpriced: Resale Value. If you have ever tried to sell an old PC/Laptop (I have a few times), you will know how little value they have even after just 2-3 years. Macbooks retain their value very well and even after 4 years you can still get 50% of your original price.
4) Of course you can install Windows on it and it runs perfectly. I have MacOS and Windows on it and both run absolutely fine. On the Windows side I have Rhino+GH, Maya and a few others. Having Windows is good, because some software still only runs on Windows (looking at you, 3DSMax!). Most other software also runs on MacOS. In the interest of sanity it is great to have an alternative to Windows for all the day to day stuff, like Mail, Calender, Photos, Presentations, etc. that just always works.
5) As for performance: Yes, Macbook Pros dont necessarily have the latest and greatest in graphics cards (the rest is on par with PC laptops), but unless you want to play games you will not need it. VRay RT can do GPU rendering, but you wont get great performance from a Notebook GPU anyways and it doesnt make sense to do rendering on a laptop (especially since you have a workstation). You could get one of the older Macbook Pro Retina Late 2013 or Mid 2014 models with the GTX750M by Nvidia, which will be usable to render using VRay RT, but of course not huge performance. Better to invest in a good used graphics card for your workstation like an Nvdia GTX980ti, which is the best value for money for GPU rendering right now (lots of used ones available).
So at least consider also getting a Macbook Pro. You can buy refurbished models (depending where you are) and they are like new, but a lot cheaper or even get an older one thats used. It will be a worthwile investment.
Take it from someone who has used dozens of PCs and Macs in my lifetime and have to do the IT support here at work (where we also use both).
I still have my Macbook Pro Retina from 2012 and its still running perfectly, super fast, and I can use Rhino and GH for huge files, do GPU Rendering with Octane Render and all sorts of other heavy computing stuff.

changing music in my itunes or on websites and it would be a machine with some programs on one side and some on the other just complicating things or constantly needing to shut down and boot up.
I think what I may need to do is just wait another year or two before I pitch out $2k for a good MacBP and stick with the PC, getting a decent machine that can hopefully last through the masters program. Some of the Lenovo, Asus and Samsung ultra books seem to have pretty nice designs, and decent specs. The current versions have mixed reviews, but they will probably have most issues addressed by Sept when I buy something... so we'll see. I may rekindle this thread in august to try and convince myself again to get a mac, but its hard to expect anything changing in that time.

ver the main Ladybug default folder onto the canvas I keep receiving an error message "Solution exception:No module named Grasshopper".
I have looked at other posts that address similar problems like this one http://www.grasshopper3d.com/group/ladybug/forum/topics/1-solution-...
but in my case the paths are ok and the script files in place. I am, however, missing "scriptcontect.pyc". Could this be the issue and if so how could I fix it? If not any other thoughts what might be wrong?

I will make sure that for the next release at least feets are supported as well.As for the saving of the time: try increasing the maxVisibilityRadius_ to say 300. Depending on your PC configuration and internet speed it may take as long as 15 minutes for the component to run. The topography file will first be downloaded from opentopography.org. That's the .tif file you noticed. Once the mask is created it will be saved to an .obj file. The next time you run it the mask will be imported from the .obj file, skipping the previous 15 minutes:
It still may take a a couple of minutes (depending on your PC configuration) for the component to complete loading of the mask. The reason why is: the mask needs to be scaled and centered according to the context_ input.Also the next time a user decides to change the maskStyle_ input or context_ input, the topography data will not be downloaded from the opentopography.org website, but rather created from the .tif file.For default maximalVisibility_ of 100, these .tif files are mostly a couple of megabytes, which is not that much of a burden on user's hard drive space. On the other hand keeping these .tif files on user's hard drive helps saving the opentopography bandwidth cap.Let me know if I can answer any further detail or if this one hasn't been clear.Hi Chris,

On genDayMtx.exe and install of the GDAL libraries: I am reluctant to avoid manual install due to blocking issue. Copying two folders manually is quite a small price to pay in comparison with finding the blocked library among tens of them.…

rk for Rhino, this is a first go at a very simple tool to get an idea of how fast different computers are at performing the sort of calculations used in Kangaroo, with the aim of informing those buying or upgrading their machines.
If you could take a couple of minutes to download and run this definition (after closing other running applications), then post here the result and your PC specs, hopefully we can start building a basic picture of what effect different hardware really has on the speed Kangaroo runs.
Most of the information can be found in the System page of Control Panel.
RAM speed can be checked in your BIOS, or with a tool like CPU-Z (note that the reported frequency from this should be doubled to get the actual RAM speed rating - eg if the frequency is 800MHz you should write DDR3-1600. It's confusing I know - see some discussion of this here), or by searching online for the specs of your PC model number.
This definition is purely testing the speed of the internal physics calculation, not display, so graphics-cards are irrelevant.
For now this is just to get a single general measure of overall Kangaroo speed, but it might also be interesting later to run a variety of tests to see how the speed varies with the size and complexity of simulation.
Of course a way of benchmarking general Grasshopper performance would be very nice to have as well, but would involve a lot more variables, and I'd be interested if anyone has ideas about how that could work.

I use grasshopper nearly all the time in my designs, rarely a project without grasshopper, so Im worried it may be annoying switching between boot-camp and parallels or something whenever I want to run rhino with grasshopper. I would hate to spend so much money on a mac and basically have it running windows all the time.
I'm wondering how anyone with a mac uses grasshopper. Are you constantly switching OSX and Windows, having to save files and then move into the other platform or how do you make it worth while for the hastle?
I've seen discussions going back to 2009 about grasshopper beta for OSX, but David has said all resorces are put on the Rhino 5 release so they havent concentrated on the OSX version yet.
Should I just buy a PC (for half the price) and wait another 2-3 years to buy a Mac, assuming that there will be a grasshopper for mac by then?
