ed to develop a component that reads data from a Tracking Server we have built here in our lab, on top of VRPN Server. We developed a client library to communicate with this server and to read data from different devices through the server, making our life easier. The fact is that I need to update data received from a wiimote for example (at a regular time interval) and output this data to feed other components. Our first approach was to test the inclussion of that library into the context of Grasshopper and it worked, but just and only for the first time the component is created of course. Now the problem is to call this update function inside grasshopper multiple times and update the output. I'm new to grasshopper component coding so, it would be nice if I can get some response of an expereinced developer or at least somebody that have developed something like the example I'm exposing here. Some code is posted below to clarify what I'm saying.
...
using VRPNClassLib; //This is our class lib.namespace MyComp{ public class MyComp : GH_Component { private VRPNController controllerWiimote = new VRPNClassLib.VRPNController("WiiMote0@localhost"); private Wiimote wii = new Wiimote();
...
private double rotX, rotY, rotZ; public MyComp() : base("Al required params ok") { try { controllerWiimote.addDevice(wii); } catch (Exception e) { throw new Exception("No wii controller attached to the PC: -->" + e.Message); } }
...
protected override void RegisterOutputParams(GH_Component.GH_OutputParamManager pManager) { pManager.Register_DoubleParam("Pos X", "X", "Wiimote X"); pManager.Register_DoubleParam("Pos Y", "Y", "Wiimote Y"); pManager.Register_DoubleParam("Pos Z", "Z", "Wiimote Z"); } protected override void SolveInstance(IGH_DataAccess DA) {
// If execute MainLoop() here for the first time it works of course, but I need to continuously read data from wiimote, how do I do that
MainLoop(); DA.SetData(0,rotX); DA.SetData(1,rotY); DA.SetData(2,rotZ); }
protected void MainLoop() { controllerWiimote.UpdateData(); //this is the function that updates device data rotX = Math.Round(wii.getSensorRot1(),2); rotY = Math.Round(wii.getSensorRot2(),2); rotZ = Math.Round(wii.getSensorRot3(),2); }
public override Guid ComponentGuid { //Genere el GUID del componente get { return new Guid("8F9858D8-F18E-45f2-90EC-CC23523ACC4F"); } } ... }}
So any sugestions are welcome.
Cheers :)…
rent actors to work together in real time on an architectural project.
DixieVR was born from the idea that virtual reality could become a fantastic tool for architecture and architects, not only for virtual tours but for the conception at its very core. Inspired by the efficiency of sandbox games, DixieVR will allow you to build a fully parametric 3D model from scratch in a very intuitive way and to simulate various factors like natural and artificial light, gravity, and more. DixieVR is also multi-user oriented : several people, architects or not, are able to work together in real time on the same 3D model and in the same shared immersive environment !
The project started in the Digital Knowledge department of Paris-Malaquais Architecture School.
The DixieVR Softwares can be found here : dixievr.github.io
// Interoperability
DixieVR deals with .dix files. For more information about this file format, please refer to the Interoperability documentation of DixieVR.
You can use this DixieIO plugin for Grasshopper/Rhinoceros for exchanging data between DixieVR (PC) & DixieViewer (Android).
You can import or export objects at any time inside a DixieVR scene. The Software also come with a library of premade objects that you might find useful. Adding your own premade objects to this library might be a good habit.
If you are hosting a scene, you also have the choice to open a .dix file directly from the main menu, this will load the last scene in which the geometry has been saved.
// Plugin
The DixieVR Plugin can be found in the Extra tab, come with 3 components and a example definition:
Dixie2Gh : Import DixieVR geometry to Grasshopper/Rhinoceros reading a .dix file (up to 1000 beams and/or 750 faces).
G2D_Polylines : Export Grasshopper/Rhinoceros Polylines to DixieVR writing a .dix file (up to 1000 line segments).
G2D_Mesh : Export Grasshopper/Rhinoceros Mesh to DixieVR writing a .dix file (up to 750 triangulated faces).
To install:
In Grasshopper, choose File > Special Folders > Components folder. Place the DixieIO_01.gha file there.
Right-click the file > Properties > make sure there is no "blocked" text.
Restart Rhinoceros or Unload Grasshopper.

thing that MicroStation does (or doesn't). The eternal debate between us is that they focus to the so called BIM aspect of things (and obviously on interoperability matters - that said IFC2*4 is" implemented" in certain Bentley verticals like BA and others) whilst I'm after assembly/component puzzles (and on that matter ... MS ...hmm... to put it politely is not exactly CATIA and/or NX, he he).
On the other hand this paranoid obsession with Level/Layer driven CAD (I hate it) defines a red thick line between CAD and MCAD - because the most intelligent importer can't emulate the way that Siemens NX/CATIA classifies objects - and without control power means nothing.
On the other hand Microstation V9 (...soon) has interesting scripting capabilities (think Modo rather Generative Components) ... meaning that Grasshopper could work there in a rather nice way. I think that I must talk for that to Ray (he recently ditched the ancient legacy MS render engine in favor for the Luxology/Nexus engine). Ray still is negative to buy Act3D mind (hope that you know the mother of visual scripting - the Quest3D VR thing).
On the other hand - within the broad AEC aspect - things these days are different (especially in fast developing countries the likes of UAE, Saudi Arabia, certain ex USSR "democracies" etc etc). Studies are outsourced even at Preliminary Design stage to various sub-contractors (they undertake the Study completion per discipline as well). This means that N separate groups doing M aspects of the whole ... meaning entropy^(N*M) - that's chaos in plain English.
With this in mind I'm quite (a lot) skeptical about the practical meaning of the whole exchange thing in AEC - at least with regard the countries mentioned (not to mention that several portions of a modern AEC thing are made via MCAD apps - chaos^chaos.
I'll back with more focused issues on that matter.
But the big question is: Grasshopper of Generative Components? Well...let's talk serious SS bikes instead: think a Ducati 1198 and a BMW S1000RR (I have them both): which is "best"? The thing is that not always the best bunny is the fasted bunny and not always the fasted bunny is the best bunny.
Cheers,
Peter

of the point cloud. It is super quick, compared to what you have seen so far in Rhino, to load and display point clouds, as it works on multiple threads. Amongst others you can section the point cloud for referencing your footbridge, decimate it as needed for creating the enviroment, denoise it, clip and save parts of point clouds etc. You can right click the cloud components, giving you access to dynamic preview of the cloud, so that it does not drag in viewport while panning and zooming and at the same time controlling the "thickness" of the points in viewport, in case your camera gets close to the point cloud. It is a matter of visual preference.
I think that even 200mil points can be loaded with volvox.
Some references
12million points
13million points
13million points (right click dynamic settings low thickness)
13million points (right click dynamic settings high thickness)
15 million points (around 20sec!! to l0ad)
My pc (i7 3820, 32gb ram, gtx670 4gb) felt comfortable working with up to 15 mil point clouds. But that has to do with hardware along with your patience while working.
All clouds have been loaded as .txt files where the mask describing the info was x,y,z,r,g,b,u,v,w. Depends on how your data is in-text formatted.
You can check fly through animations all done with gh and Volvox here
