connected hyperspace where architecture can be fluid, flexible and vivid, yet the aspect of materiality requires more attention.
Action-designed structures begin to move beyond the utopian proposals of the 20th century’s manifestos and hold a place in the world of realized designs. The AA Athens Visiting School aims to bring users closer to the built environment while revisiting habits of designing, building and experiencing space through materiality. Understanding materiality and form as a ‘unified whole’, the programme integrates manufacturing techniques through the experimentation fabrication of prototypes at a 1:1 scale.
Prominent Features of the workshop/ skills developed
Participants become part of an active learning environment where the large tutor to student ratio allows for personalized tutorials and debates.
The toolset of the Athens VS includes but is not limited to Processing and Grasshopper for Rhinoceros, as well as design analysis software.
Participants gain hands-on experience on digital fabrication.
Design seminars and a series of lectures support the key objectives of the programme, disseminating fundamental computational techniques, relevant critical thinking, theoretical understanding and professional awareness.

is an emerging research area that exploits the principles and logic of natural systems in the design of the built environment. Sandworks* investigates the development of a computational design system informed by the sand self-formation behaviour. The knowledge objective is to understand the process of coding the material physical behaviour that follows the geometrical constraints of developable, ruled and hyperbolic surfaces formed by sand. Through physical and digital form-finding exercises, the workshop will explore the relationships between material and its shaping processes in the generation of form in parallel to theoretical lectures and discussion on cutting edge approaches of computational thinking, design and fabrication in architecture and design. Participants will be introduced to ruled based design thinking through digital design and fabrication systems as well as physical modelling and prototyping techniques.. The workshop aim is to provide an understanding framework of how such processes occur in nature and find their translation in the design of the artificial. *This research started at the Architectural Association school of architecture in London exploring the design and fabrication techniques of sand tectonic system and now it is pursued at ENSA Paris-Malaquias focusing on the development of the machinic morphogenetic possibilities of sand self-formation with robotic distribution of material through addition, subtraction and deposition techniques.www.sandworks.org /// Application To apply, please follow this link to fill the application form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1n_LN2svFTT79kCqndxznKRj4PX8J8__FVNKvjiHTeJU/viewform /// Fees* 1700 EGP for students / 2000 EGP for graduates and young professionals * 20 % discount for early registration and payment before 22 nd of August 2014 more info on the workshop webpage: http://www.encodestudio.net/#!sandworks/c1nn1…

See this? A 2400 seat WIP Opera Project. Imagine an outer envelope kinda a "shell" made by custom MERO members (a bit stupid engineering solution I confess) ... and various interior "shells" (concrete) that define the in-topology : audience/stage/workshops/activities/etc. About 70 heavily nested 3d files compose the total solution (in Final Level Study, meaning nuts and bolts Level of Detail).
On first (a bit Academic) consideration the envelope could be "easily" made by Grasshopper and/or Generative Components (patterning of some sort) by arranging MERO nodes and truss members across some V/U derived bezier curves ....the only problem is that the solution should...er...be a real-life arrangement of real-life nodes and truss members (not to mention real-life milling axis etc etc).
What about interoperability between the Architectural and the Structural Design team? What if the Structural Analysis/Feasibility study/etc indicates that the solution is not viable?
All that ... before designing some real-life skin support system (final skin: custom metal panels + 100mm Foamglass + membranes + custom alu support system + VM Zink).
All that...having in mind that some specialized manufacturer (like Donges AG) could receive structured 3D data that could/should comply with the way that MCAD apps - the likes of NX/CATIA - do business.
And that's the CATCH 22 these days: no non MCAD app supports any kind of meaningful assembly-component entity management. See for instance how naif Microstation is on that matter...not to mention Rhino (Rhino can't even manage different collection of entities on a per View basis - not to mention Dynamic Clips etc etc etc).
So the 1M question is : what serve power without control?

2. WORKSHOP (23-27 April 2014)
A 5 day Design-Based Research Workshop exploring new techniques in Digital Architecture/Fabrication, with a specific focus on the use of generative systems and parametric modeling as tools for creative expression.
Our ultimate goal is to increasing the efficiency of utilizing digital tools in parallel with geometric performance of the primitive design agent.
+ + CONCEPT
Fashion and Architecture are both based on basic life necessities – clothing and shelter.
However, they are also forms of self-expression – for both creators and consumers.
Both fashion and architecture affect our emotional being in many ways.
The agenda of this workshop is to investigate on the overlap between these two areas of design, art & fashion.
Fashion and architecture express ideas of personal, social and cultural identity, reflecting the concerns of the user and the ambition of the age. Their relationship is a symbiotic one and throughout history, clothing and buildings have echoed each other in form and appearance. This only seems natural as they not only share the primary function of providing shelter and protection for the body, but also because they both create space and volume out of flat, two-dimensional materials.
While they have much in common, they are also intrinsically different – address the human scale, but the proportions, sizes and shapes differ enormously.
+ + + OBJECTIVES
So far, Architects have been using techniques such as folding, bending etc. to create space, structural roofs or different other structural shapes.
The agenda of this workshop goes further with the investigation of algorithmic thinking through generative tools Integrated in design.
The challenge is creating a bridge that connects these two areas of design, architecture and fashion that perform at two opposite scales.
+ + + + TECHNICAL BRIEF
In the early stages physical models and low-tech strategies will be used, allowing the participants to gain a greater understanding of materials, fabrication and assembly methods as well as simple, yet pragmatic structural solutions.
Later in the workshop these strategies will be digitalized and elaborated using software visualizing tools such as Rhinoceros and the algorithmic plug-in Grasshopper.…
