4) Discuss possible applied research and design work for the National Conference on the Beginning Design Student paper, Machine Craft and the Contemporary Designer: exploring parameters and variables through making physical artifacts. I wrote the attached abstract and submitted it for the conference the past fall and it was accepted. To continue with the research I need to assemble a team of students that will help explore the principles I set forth by making physical objects with the cnc router. In exchange for helping with the research I will show participants how to use the cnc router, how to author machine code and provide you with the cnc controller interface software necessary to simulate machine movements. Not to mention, your work will be sited in the research paper I present at the conference at UNC Charlotte in March. More tomorrow night, of course.

All,
In response to Erik, who requested that I describe my intentions in a design-build project and to the article posted (definitely required reading for this group) I propose that we begin development of a project that spans the realm of "sustainable social" architecture and parametric design. The particulars of such a design do need to be made concrete, and it will be important to define the goals of such a project.
Therefore, I would suggest that this serve as a forum for the next few weeks for those interested in producing a built project. I agree with Nico that it may not be feasible to create the built piece, whatever it may be, this term; however we should have the groundwork and a plan in place by the end of the next 10 weeks.
Either way, I would ask that everyone who is interested to please provide as many concepts to this forum to begin a discussion. If you are indeed interested, please submit goals that this project could achieve (energy, socially, aesthetically, economically, related) and perhaps what you envision the project to physically be (shading device, public bench, water catchment, interactive thermal contraption, etc . . . )
I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

This is in relation to a discussion I've been having with David Rutten & Scott Davidson about GH consuming memory in a relatively large GH definition (~. I think what I've learned from this is that one should limit the size of the GH file, or put some incremental stops in the definition to limit the length of calculations that it runs at once. Is this a valid conclusion?
The GH file we're talking about is 7Mb & the Rhino file is about 120Mb, but when working w/ the GH def. I try to only keep about 2 curves turned on.

I've been fiddling with the file for about 10 minutes and it climbed from 1.7 GB to 1.9GB, but then I've been switching previews on which means more meshes get calculated so you'd expect a higher memory consumption. It is possible we're leaking memory, but if you're working for hours on end, memory fragmentation might also explain part of the increase. Basically, memory gets fragmented just like disks get fragmented after prolonged use, difference is that memory cannot be defragmented unless you restart the application and allow it to start with a clean slate. I'll try and find any leaks we may have missed in the past.Goodwill,David

Do you know of a generic container in Rhincommon I can store geometry form meshes, breps and curves to points? That's what I seem to need to get around the IEnumerable error.

At long last, only to find out it won't work right, as in no setting of flexibility will affect it at all?!
Tolerance has a sudden crazy effect if I turn it way up, like a piece of paper bending up opposite corners and it no long is trimmed, but flexibility is dead. I used your same values and same curves for everything. Yes, all the curves are participating, if I bake them and move them around.
My Patch is broken. Weird. Is there magic with the starting surface? I made a naive assumption just a plane would do. Yet you seem to be using your simple CreatePatch results for this?
Ah, the second CreatePatch command type that takes only a surface gives the same thing, nearly. You need a starting surface at all?! They said you could now leave that out as of Rhino SR10 by using Null, but Null or Nothing gives an error. How do I make a null? In Python it's None, as in just entering None into the Rhinocommon command or assigning a variable to None.
Now I have a patch!
But your's is more expressive, more crazy, like your starting surface is greatly influencing it to have extremely extended feet, whereas mine works like a normal patch, as if you were trying to smooth over things. And indeed your surface pull slider makes it more obvious you chose a specific starting surface attached to one of the curves. My starting planes had no such effect, earlier.
With such a starting surface to bias the results I get the same thing finally, indeed, good to know what that does, I never knew from using the command in Rhino.
Why did my use of a plane shut this down so badly though?! Crazy command.

sometimes the same pattern that can be planarized in one file would stop working once something else is modified. and sometimes the force can't even planarize one single cell.

Making the faces of a polygonal mesh planar is not always possible without dramatically changing the shape of either the polygons or the surface.
When the target surface has only positive Gaussian curvature it makes things somewhat easier, but the surface in your file also has regions of negative Gaussian curvature.
To approximate a surface of negative curvature with a discrete mesh, we need the angles around some of the vertices to sum to less than 360°. This is impossible to do in a mesh with 3 hexagons around each vertex without making some of these hexagons non-convex.
There are a few possible approaches, but I would say how to automatically cover an arbitrary surface with nicely shaped planar hexagons is still an unsolved problem.'
