Instructions for Installing Ladybug + Honeybee: (Follow steps 1-6 for basic functionality and 1-11 for full functionality) 0. If you have an old version of LB+HB, download the file here (https://app.box.com/s/ds96em9l6stxpcw8kgtf) and open it in Grasshopper to remove your old Ladybug and Honeybee version. 1. Make sure that you have a working copy of both Rhino and Grasshopper installed. 2. Open Rhino and type "Grasshopper" into the command line (without quotations). Wait for grasshopper to load. 3. Install GHPython by downloading the file at this link (http://www.food4rhino.com/project/ghpython?ufh) and drag the .gha file onto the Grasshopper canvas. 4. Select and drag all of the files in the "userObjects" folder (downloaded with this instructions file) onto your Grasshopper canvas. You should see Ladybug and Honeybee appear as tabs on the grasshopper tool bar. (If you are reading this instruction on github you can download them from http://www.food4rhino.com/project/ladybug-honeybee) 5. Download the files at this link (https://app.box.com/s/bh9sbpgajdtmmystv3n4), unzip them and copy the contents to both C:\ladybug and C:\Users\[yourUsername]\AppData\Roaming\Ladybug. 6. Restart Rhino and Grasshopper. You now have a fully-functioning Ladybug. For Honeybee, continue to the following: 7. Install Radiance to C:\Radiance by downloading it from this link (https://github.com/NREL/Radiance/releases/download/4.2.2/radiance-4...) and running the exe. 6. Install Daysim to C:\DAYSIM by downloading it at this link (http://daysim.ning.com/page/download) and running the exe. 8. Install Energy Plus 8.1 to C:\EnergyPlusV8-1-0 by going to the DOE website (http://apps1.eere.energy.gov/buildings/energyplus/energyplus_downlo...), making an account, going to "download older versions of EnergyPlus, selecting 8.1 and running the exe. 9. Copy falsecolor2.exe (http://pyrat.googlecode.com/files/falsecolor2.exe) and evalglare.exe (http://www.ise.fraunhofer.de/en/downloads-englisch/software/evalgla...) to C:\Radiance\bin 10. Download the OpenStudio Libraries (https://app.box.com/s/y2sx16k98g1lfd3r47zi) and unzip them to C:\ladybug\OpenStudio. 11. You now have a fully-working version of Ladybug + Honeybee. Get started visualizing weather data with these video tutorials (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLruLh1AdY-Sj_XGz3kzHUoWmpWDX...).

new component "OSM 3D roof"):
2) Simplified 3D roads can be created by using the network of OSM polylines (through new component "OSM 3D road"):
3) 3D forest.Up until now, Gismo supported generating a single 3d tree whenever such tree was present in openstreetmap.org database. Now it is possible to generate 3d trees in forest areas, by randomly positioning the 3d trees (through new component "OSM 3D forest"):
4) Boolean 3d shapes.Gismo's "OSM 3D" component generates shapes as parts: for example, if a building has irregular shapes across its height, they will all be created individually. Trying to merge them with Grasshopper's "Solid Union" component can sometimes fail.New Gismo "Rhino Boolean Union" components tries to overcome this issue by using a much better Rhino version of this command.
5) Library of common GIS color palettes (gradients).A single component containing 22 of the common color palettes used in GIS applications as ArcGIS and QGIS. For example: elevation, aspect, precipitation...
6) Url to location. Thanks to idea by Alex Ng, it is possible to extract location from a link of the following map websites: Openstreetmap, google maps, bing maps, wego.here, waze:

when i type the equations for z,y,z it says a syntax error so i obviously do not understand how to construct an expression. (screen capture attached)
Any help/explanation of using this function would be greatly appreciated
thanks so much

ow the steps of the successful run when step 1.2 is bypassed (note that the and OpenFOAM session is open in the background while running the Butterfly demo file):
1. create wind tunnel, and use different parameters of (4,4) for _globalRefLevel_ as suggested by Theodoro in this post
2. run blockMesh:
3. run snappyHexMesh:
4. run checkMesh:
5. connect the case from checkMesh to simpleFOAM and run the simulation:
6. the simulation converged at 1865 iteration, but the results visualization part has some problem:
7. so I revised this part according to suggestions from Hagit:
8. and the results can be visualized for P and U values:
The GH file used for the successful run shown above is attached here.
Now, the following is the error I got when the case from the update fvScheme component is used for simpleFOAM simulation:
the warning message on the simpleFOAM component is:
1. The error message from the readMe! output node is attached below as a text file.
Hope you can kindly advise what the important steps or parameters I might have missed here. I assume it might be related to OpenFOAM rather than with the Butterfly workflow...
Thank you very much!

ou will see all of the available components on a ribbon at once so there is no need to keep clicking drop down menus.
It's all about discoverability with GH. What if you're a beginner and don't know about the Create Facility (dbl click canvas) how can you find Extr?
Even if you hover over every component or use the drop down lists you will not see the name Extr appear anywhere.
Sure it makes sense that Extr is short for Extrude but it's also the Nick Name of Extrude to Point component
So you can easily miss the fact that one has a Distance Input verses a Point Input.
I think I made the move to Icons around about the move from version 0.5 to 0.6, possibly before. I initially thought that I would go back to text because I loved the mono chromatic look of the text but I soon realised that Icons were the way forward. The greatest benefit is speed. You don't need to digest and decipher every component (which is written 90 degrees to the norm).
I'm not saying you should move to Icons forthwith but at least consider that once you have a better knowledge and understanding of GH, Icons will set you free.
My top ten tips that I would highly recommend to anyone wanting to better themselves with GH.
1) Turn on Draw Icons
2) Turn on Draw Fancy Wires
3) Turn on Obscure Components
4) Use the Create Facility like a Command Line eg "Slider=-1<0.75<2" or "Shiftlist=-1"
5) Use Component Aliases to customise your use of the Create Facility eg giving the Point XYZ component an alias of XYZ will bring it up as the first option on the Create Facility as opposed to the other possibilities.
6) Try to answer other people's questions even if it's not relevant to your own area. By looking into solving a problem outside of your comfort zone and then posting your results it is very rewarding but it also lets you see the other approaches that get posted in a new light.
7) Take the time to understand Data/Path structures.
8) Buy a second monitor - There is nothing that can compare to real estate when working in Grasshopper.
9) Read Rajaa Issa's Essential Mathematics
10) Pick a panel in a tab on the ribbon and get to know every component inside and out and then move on. Start with the Sets Tab > List Panel…

1. Select a building to mount a photovoltaic generator on (seen in Rhino in green).
2. Select a surface within that building to mount a photovoltaic generator on (seen in Rhino in green).
3. Create a Honeybee context surface from that surface.
4. Place a photovoltaic generator on that Honeybee context surface by using the Honeybee generation component. Honeybee_Generator_PV and connecting the context surface to it's input _HBSurfaces. Then you can specify both the performance and the financial data of the photovoltaic generator.
5. Create a Honeybee generation system which consists of the photovoltaic generator in 4. By using the component Honeybee_generationsystem and connecting 4 to its input PVHBSurfaces_. Then you can specify the annual maintenance cost of this system.
6. Run the simulation in Energy Plus by connecting 5. to the input HBGenerators_.
7. Read the results of the simulation:
- The electricity produced by the Honeybee generation system in 5.
- The net purchased electricity of the facility (the Honeybee zone) to which the Honeybee generation system is attached to. This is the electricity consumed by the facility less the electricity generated by the Honeybee generation system.
- The financial costs of the Honeybee generation system; capital, maintenance and replacement costs.
8. Calculate the net present cost of the Honeybee generation system in 5 assuming a 25 year lifetime.
9. Visualise the net present cost.

r your need.. bravo my friend!
2.Hahaha career first, woman later.
3.maybe it is because my country has yet to use the softwares you mentioned, I am pretty sure they are used by engineer, since my practice is only architectural work, we always collaborate with the engineer to get the job done (by collaborate, I mean passing on the job to the engineer, and then we just let them handle all the stuff, the sad news is architect and designers doesnt get paid much to deal with those)
in contrast with your software, me and my team use Rhino,GH,3dsmax, and Zbrush-- these are standard package you got after u graduate from any arch.college. the level of detail I produce in my modelling is not as "heavy" as yours because the client I face every week only worries about the appearance of the building, as well as convenience in terms of planning, efficiency, and cost control over the design.
I am surprised you don't use REVIT or ArchiCAD? they are the standard for BIM documentation.
4.well, subdiv modeling is one of my fave. (That is why Tspline is my fave tool in rhino, to sketch out the model that I want, however it depends on the type of geometry you are after, for "solid modelling" I prefer Subdiv modelling rather than standard NURBS )
5. no comment for that hahaha
6.I disagree, I think Rhino needs a TOP rendering software as part of rhino system itself. to make it at least on par with 3dsmax. rhino isn't built for restrictive use like CATIA, so its purpose is for "MODELLING and VISUALIZATION". at the moment we only see the "MODELLING" part.
7.+1 for this
8.I have to agree with that. there is no way we can incorporate BIM in Rhino. also it is not widely accepted to somehow have BIM file in Rhino format. but...
9. in the future it might be, because if you compared rhino 4 to rhino 5 there has been a major breakthrough, who knows what will happen in rhino 6 or 7.
10.I saw a post the other day,David said he intended GH to be algorimtic modelling instead of parametric, and GH is like a swiss army knife, it has thousands of tools to do general job, but it requires 3rd party member (we call it add-on) to extend its uses. Id prefer GH to have much broader function to encourage people to expand its wings
PS= are u talking about augmented reality? :)
Peace!…
learn, or as an alternative to your morning coffee + cross-word puzzle.
Rules:
Contributions can be posted by anyone. Either selected from a previously posted problem from the general discussion (please acknowledge original poster), a selection from one of the many grasshopper+ primers (please include credits) something you think is fun, curious about, or even something you want to learn.
We should keep the entries dated so we can track them. One new problem per day (so if you see one posted for today- there is always tomorrow).
User(you) adds post titled: date-name of problem.
Solutions will be posted with breakdowns, either in logic procedure, etc. And in the spirit of the NY Times, an explained solution will be posted as well within the following days.
Remember there are multiple ways to solve a problem- however the “official” post should include a “clean and elegant” (or simplest) solution. So that all learning can develop better scripting habits.
Rules: an explanation.
1- Submission categories are as follows:
Native
Plug In
Scripted
Each category should have a difficulty rating - 1 to 5 perhaps.
They should be included in title for clarity-
Date_NameOfProblem_Native Plugin or Script_Difficulty
2. Since we are an international community, and this is an open group- a C+G day starts at the time of 10 am local poster’s time.
3.Anyone can set the next question. However the same person cannot set two days in a row. If a question is up- then next person needs to wait until the following day to post. You can PM Danny Boyes or Myself (Monique) if you are having posting issues- (i.e.: how to post, or have been trying to post, but keep missing the opportunity)
4. Answers are presented in the typical grasshopper community response way: in the form of examples, and/or screen shots. For screen shots: make sure the nodes are legible, if you do a function inside a node make sure we can see what you did. Verbal explanation. Maybe picture of result.
The difference between this group and the general discussion is that the poster should know how to solve the problem, be able to post a solution up themselves.
5. The poster judges the answer. They should offer a sample solution as well when they declare the winner.
However overall quality control may be checked by moderators of the group.
6. Still thinking about this one. …
uments:
1. You are targeting CATIA don't you? (not exactly tomorrow but ... soon) and/or SolidWorks (hello C# haven't we met before?).
2. You MUST deal with nested block instances instead of what you are trying to do right now (I'm talking about the real MERO things not abstract Lines and points). This is not doable with GH components I'm afraid (but it's rather easy with code).
3. You MUST deal with RDBMS in order to keep track with what's going on in your company per project per case per designer (who sells that bolt? what's his cat name? is he a reliable supplier? what I'm doing in life? ... that sort of "queries"). At this point: CATIA is 1% CAD things and 99% PLM stuff (Product Life cycle Management). We do want that since it's 21st century running don't we?.
I hear you: but these are 3 arguments ... indeed but ... hey who's counting? he he.
Method:
A. This def attached has a very simple C# that gets mesh Pts and makes a nice U/V style collection of points (DataTree in plain English).
B. Then we go to that umbrella sticks thingy: we can calculate anything (already the thing does "some") plus your collections of divided points (with the right way, he he) VS a given node: you said (Skype) that you want to calculate angles with these (from 2 to 6) in mind: obvious since you are doing real-life MERO things.
C. Then we could calculate the appropriate Planes for PlaneToPlane transformations: get a nested instance definition (the red things that you've showed to me yesterday) placed at 0,0,0 (Plane.WorldXY) and put in in every Plane collection related with every node (clash defection is an obvious must).
Case resolved, closed: what about that Vodka?

itects are at the spoke of a number of different specialties, and their work affects many different people. It's not like an architect is a painter, whose work may offend or upset the occasional viewer. As an architect you have a responsibility to produce quality work. How can anybody trust you with this responsibility if you're taking a purely artistic approach? What guarantees do you have that your clients money won't be spend on a poorly designed project if you can provide no rational for why your design is the way it is?
2. What is any sense in purely architectural discourse?
I don't get. Discourse is there to flesh out problems and agree on solutions. It might not always accomplish that, but what's the difference between talking about architecture as opposed to any other topic?
3. strictly looked, can be determined sense generally in a purely architectural discourse?
I'm sorry I don't understand.
4. What is purely architectural discourse?
I imagine it's having a discussion where you only talk about architecture?
5. What is Funktionalismus or Rationalismus without philosophical support?
Functionalism and Rationalism are ideologies. Some would even call them methodologies. They are inherently philosophical things as they are nothing more than a collection of ideas and views. As a society we've decided that a certain level of rationalism is a good thing. The Enlightenment continued this trend after the Dark Age hiatus and it quickly led to a large number of very tangible benefits for almost everyone.
I'm not arguing for or against Functionalism as an architectural style. I'm asking for a measure of rationalism in our academic process.
6. Would not be the pure functional fulfilment empty ?
Let's find out. In the meantime I'll settle for a little functionalism.
7. Would be not a critical position on the promise of purely rational algorithms applied?
Algorithms and algorithmic design are rational in the sense that they do not allow for ambiguity. But that doesn't make them rational in the real-world sense. These are not the same kind of 'rational's. I can make an algorithm that produces total nonsense, but does so completely reliably. I can also use an algorithm in a setting for which it wasn't intended, thus invalidating the results.
This is actually the crux of the problem. Which algorithms does one use to solve a problem and what data do they require? If you can't answer this question or if you do not understand the algorithms you are using (at least on a superficial level) then I'd say you have no business using them.
