Hi Daniel, I think I've got a question which is really suitable for you: Do you know if it's possible to generate a Costa Minimal Surface in Grasshopper? I had a look at the function with a mathematician-friend, but he told me it was involving complex numbers (weierstrass function) and grashopper propably can't calculate this. Any ideas?

Hi, Daniel i want to create a geodesic dome but i have no clue how to strat. i found a topic where you showed your dome but definition doesnt work on my grasshopper. can you send me a picture of this definition?

    Thanks in advance

Hi Daniel! For the Kangaroo, do you have any plans for doing inflated shapes? It would be cool!
I guess it would be interesting to have both stretchy and rigid materials. I made a hands-on test once: http://www.omkrets.se/inflated/ It's a plastic bag, which means it's not stretching, but it will wrinkle and thus get double curved.
Here are some examples of inflated shapes that stretch: http://farm4.static.flickr.com /3288/3153404777_eea3e7b0d5.jpg (Swedish artist Lars Englund)
    What do you think?
  • Mårten Nettelbladt

    Ok, cool!

"Incidentally, on a related note - I remember seeing several years ago a book of Nervi's writings translated into English which had few pages at the end where he talked briefly about mutually perpendicular systems of curved lines and why they are interesting, along with some of his hand sketches of a few such systems. I've not been able to track the book down since. Can anyone give me a title ? ."

Very interesting Daniel, any luck with tracking down a title for this writing yet?

    Dear David

I saw a video on your blog that intrigating me.

    It's about Surface Distribution.

A friend of mine asked me if it's possible to calculate the paneling of an organic Srf ( let's say kind of half of a potatoe) with equilateral triangles in a geodesic way which is different from what paneling scripts in rhino when we consider surface domains that are concentrics.
He wants connected equilateral 3D triangles that may change in sizes but every  sides must stay equal.

He is looking for something near what I see on your video.

Do you think it's possible to do that in GH?

I can send you a picture of desired result if you're interested.

Thank you in advance for answering me

    Best regards

    RS

    Hi Daniel,

I just followed your kangaroo basics tutorial on Vimeo, to try and get to grips with Kangaroo a little bit. I'm pretty new to GH anway, so jumping straight into Kangaroo maybe be a bit stupid.

Anyway, I want to be able to create a helix, then to affect the pitch along its length, while maintaining the overal height of the helix by keeping both ends fixed, so I can have more turns closer together at one end, then have the control to start moving them apart further along it's length. I thought that maybe Kangaroo could do this easily.  Afterall it's a kind of spring that I'm after.  I don't know if there's a simpler way to do this in GH or if Kangaroo is the best way to achieve it.

    Any advice would be great

    Thanks

    Paul

    Hi Daniel,

I'm trying to find how to deal with this problem (http://modelab.nu/?p=63) using Kangaroo. I've maked a simulation with two threads but when I try to make more threads the definition doesn't work. Have you tried this before?

    Thank you in advance.

    Best Regards.

    Hi Daniel,

Is it possible using Kangaroo, to apply force from objects(using springs maybe) to a group of connected objects, without disturbing their hierarchy(relationship with their neighboring geometry)... these connected objects are inter-joined... the object themselves may or mayn't deform depending on the strength of force....if yes, how?

    Thanks...

    Hi Daniel,

I have a few question for you regarding stiffness tolerances for surface relaxation in Kangaroo. I'm attempting to use kangaroo as a form-finder for a cable-net clastic structure which i'm using to skin my design studio building. I'm trying to use varying degrees of stiffness in separate curve sets to create somewhat of a 'seam' definition on the surface of the processed relaxation, and was wondering if there was a better way to approach it than what I've been doing. The curve sets I am referring to are labeled as the Diagonal Tension Cables and Ramp Pressure Curves in the Script. My problem is now occuring where the circulation ramp is protruding through the relaxed skin, I need to figure out how to create a reactionary force back on the skin to push it away from the ramps. Thanks in advance, I know it sounds confusing but I taught myself Kangaroo last night, andI have a feeling its an easy fix.

    Hey Daniel

A bit of a random question, (non gh related). At your Shape to Fabricate presentation i believe you mentioned home-made 3d scanning your workshop's panels to see how accurate they were. Just wondering what software you used for this?

I was gutted when i found out too late that they had reduced prices of the workshops. Yours and gregs was really fascinating!

    Thanks,

    Nick

I created a group of mesh in Grasshopper, then I turned the "FLOOR" to true, but the meshes didn't stop at floor level. Could anyone help to see what's wrong with the meshes? This is the link to the questions and the files. Thanks!

    Hi Daniel,

    (Flat_circlepacking_ikerImage.gh)

I have manage to adapt this definition that you worked on(circle packing), o an image-field that defines the radii of the circles, but my main target is to optimize the radii for a better arrangement and population within the image-field allowing the radii to change and adapt during the simulation... some one posted in you tube a great video where they show this plus other interesting packing logic's....

any suggestions about to achieve similar results as image base/fighting for space....?

Could you please explain in a few words which forces and how distributed create such a tension between points.

I guesed there are 2 anchor pts on each side. And should be some sort of repulsion going on...

    Couldn't make it

    thank you

    Hi Daniel,

I`ve started to use grasshoper one week ago and I want to ask you about your reciprocal force`s diagram. How did you do it?

  • Elisabeth Puscher

    Hi daniel,

i have some questions about the reciprocal component and the optimization for tangency with kangaroo.

I found your example definition, but it doesn't work with my gemometry.

I want to create a reciprocal structure with an offset of 10cm (=rod diameter)

Can you explain, how the scale factor for the reciprocal component influences the quality of the result for the offset?

If i choose a small scale factor (e.g. 1.20), the max. deviation from the offset is veriy big. (9,8 cm)

If i choose a larger scale facotr (e.g. 2.00), the max. deviation from the offset is much smaller and better. (0,04 cm)

But then some points occure which are geometrically not possible. (see figure below)

Do you have any suggestions how to avoid this and to get better results?

Maybe you can have a look at my GH definition:

    reciprocal_structure.gh

    Thank you!!

    Elisabeth

  • Elisabeth Puscher

    hi daniel,

I have saved the file with internalized mesh, I hope you can open it now.

    reciprocal_structure.gh

yes, i think these crossing-over problems on the pictures might be related on the scale factor of the edges.

however, if i coose a smaller scaling factor, i don't have this problems, but then the max deviation from the offset is very big.

Is there another way to get a better result for the offset?

    thank you,

    elisabeth

    Hi Daniel,

I am having trouble turning a surface/mesh into a series of equal equilateral triangles.

I downloaded the latest Kangaroo but unfortunately some of the toggles have changed and whenever I open a script from these forums there are parts missing.

Can you provide me with some assistance?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Daniel,

Is there a possible way to panel your folding origami on surface smoothly?

I tried using morph3D paneling tool but somehow the intersections between each pattern are overlapping and not smoothly join.

    Hi Daniel,

I am trying to integrate a simple 2d collision with Kangaroo in GHPython. in the example of the attached file, I have 5 polygons, four of which are attached by their coincident vertices. The attached polygons should move as single body and should repel the isolated polygon, which is not connected to anything. I am able to implement it in GH. I am able to implement the forces in GH and the solver in Python. However, when I try to implement the forces in GH Python, the results are buggy. Nothing happens and when I move a slider that constraint the max number of iterations, the shapes start to rotate.

    Hi Daniel,

I was wondering if I could get some advice on using Kangaroo 2/Rhino 5 to "shrinkwrap" geometry.  I've attached a file for your reference.

I have a created a sphere around a solid mesh. The sphere is collapsing using a zero length goal and the vertices of the mesh should be colliding with the sphere, but instead they appear to be pulling through the solid.

Any advice on how to best preserve the collision?

Thanks in advance for any help you have time to provide.

    Best,

    David
