Sorry it took so long to get back to you, hope your final presentation went well.
For future reference I actually dissected a previously done bamboo model. I removed all of the stems, then began to copy, stretch and scale the leaves until I had a good canopy. (use blocks!)
I would certainly recommend doing this last, after entire rest of scene/building has been modeled. The leaves were all meshes and referenced blocks, however adjusting the camera was none the less unbearable. Finally the rendering took forever, over 24 hours in vray (large image).

nice visual.. where did you get the 3d plants from? ;)
i´m a few days before my final presentation and i´m looking for sth exactly like those plants to render.
