A sequence of alternately subdividing and planarizing, to end up with an all planar-quad panelization with over 2000 faces (curvature analysis shown above). Done with Weaverbird and Kangaroo.

    Here's a close up of the final mesh in the sequence above.

    It still needs an additional smoothing force to counteract the ridges you can see appearing, but its a start and at least its planar.

    Cool! Could the input surface be double curved as well?

    In your example it looks like the original volume is already made up of (almost) planar quads, but considerably fewer... :-)

    It would be interesting to pair this up with the inflation tools!
