Mosquito

Tools to access streaming vectors maps and data sources such as Flickr, Twitter, Facebook, Google Maps, GeoData, StockMarket

...and a bunch of other stuff

Mosquito is a plugin suite developed for Rhino and Grasshopper. The plugin allows us to tap into social , financial and popular media. Extracting location, profiles, images and messages from Facebook,Twitter, Topsy etc….

As architects part of our responsibility is the consideration of the public realm. Today however , people tend to hang in the digital equivalent, namely, social media space. While this space becomes ever more permanent, the physical realm is fleeting, an evanescent space.

We are utilizing the tools in this component suite to bridge the gap between geometrics and information. Driving geometry with data and vice-versa. The ability to extract user Geo-coordinates, language, thoughts, profile and image enables architects to paint a picture. It is this  4-dimensional picture, which we refer to as “spatial condition”, that allows us to explore what happened yesterday, now and hypothesize about tomorrow. True 4-dimensional modeling.

  • Giacomo Chiesa

dear all, I have a problem with mosquito. I have used it last week and everything was perfect, nevertheless today every app give me an error report.. about  'Newtonsoft.Json, Version=4.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=30ad4fe6b2a6aeed'

do anyone know how to fix it?

    thank you

  • Carson Smuts

Hmm, strange, did you install a new version of GH? or Rhino? recently?

  • Giacomo Chiesa

I have installed CADtoEarth.Rhino. Now I have uninstalled it and Mosquito works again! thank you!! that's and incredible tool!

  • Carson Smuts

Giacomo: Interesting , I have not come across that issue yet, thanks for sharing your solution :)

  • Justin Depoy

All right, my problem is solved.

    Thanks

  • Conor Scully

    Hi Guys,

I have been really struggling with Mosquito. I am currently living in London and the Twitter tool just doesn't seem to be returning any data. I know twitter has been cracking down on it's API. If anyone could shine some light on the situation I would be very grateful. I am currently running windows through a mac bootcamp partition if that makes any difference. Also. I downloaded the plugin about a month ago and it seemed to be working fine then. Conor

  • Carson Smuts

Hi Conor: could you send me your file and I'll try from over here in the states, make sure you include the location which you want to search, thanks

  • Tom Withers

The location component just stopped working for me. It was working fine for a while but has now stopped returning adresses and points. I was wondering if there was a daily limit on location queries that I had exceeded, or some other reason why the location component might suddenly stop working?

(The google direct component still works fine)

  • Carson Smuts

Tom: yes , it does have a limit..... if you bombard it with a bunch of request in one go , google thinks you are trying to hack them. Try another network and let me know if it works then..... It is still working for me as of right now

  • Tom Withers

Ooops! I think that's what I may have accidentally done. Do you know if I am banned from for life or just temprorarily suspended?

  • Carson Smuts

You are suspended for an hour or so, i think.... you should be up and running again by tomorrow for sure though.

I would try again in 1 hour

How can I extract uploaded images from my twitter account. I managed to extract the link but fail to extract image URL. Can you explain how? It says here that Flikr component can be used to extract image from twitter as well but not really clear how to do it. Can anyone explain? Thank you in advance.

  • Carson Smuts

you need to use the image-download component

    IMAGE-DOWNLOAD

This component allows us to download images from a URL list and save them to a directory on our hard drives. This component is meant to be used with the Flickr and Twitter component.

ImageURL: The list of image http url you want to download.

Name: The name that should be given to the file.

Directory: The directory in which to save the image.

Reload: If toggled the images will be downloaded.

  • Thomas Müller-Valentin

This plugIn is awesome. Thanks a lot.

  • Carson Smuts

Thomas: no problem , hope you find it useful :)

  • kwanphil cho

Carson. Just let you know that Mosquito is not working at the moment. Any issues with the plug in that you are aware of?

  • Carson Smuts

Dear Kwanphil, Yes , I just tried it out and everything is working 100%. Perhaps you can try a different internet connection? Note that the twitter component must be used in moderation, roughly 200 queries per hour. In other words , if you run a timer on it or put a giant list of queries into the component, you will be banned from twitter for roughly 1 hour and then you can try again. What was the error you received?

  • Carol

I have encountered this error with the Facebook component. How can I solve this? Thank you.

  • Carson Smuts

Dear Carol, the API appears to have changed for Facebook. I have not had time to update this plugin. I will try to get around to it sometime this week and will post an update shortly.

  • Jonathan Wiederin

    Hi,

does anyone have a solution for this error? Can`t I work with this .prj file that I used, which would mean i can`t work with the .shp file that I have?

    Thank you

  • Jonatan Schumacher

Hi, thank you for all the hard work to create these components! The SonicTweet component works well for me, but I am not able to search by only supplying a #tag. '#coke' returns bad request error. 'cola #coke' works fine. Any advice on searching solely for hash tags is greatly appreciated.

  • Carson Smuts

Dear Jonatan, thanks for pointing out this problem. Let me have a look and back to you on that.

  • Carson Smuts

Dear Jonathan Wiederin, could you post your file? I'll then take a look at it???

  • Jonathan Wiederin

    mosquito%20jonathan.gh

    ALK_Gebaeude.prj

    Here are both files.

.gh and .prj if you need the .shp let me know.

    Thanks for helping.

  • Carson Smuts

    Dear Jonathan Wiederin,

Hmm, very strange.... It appears that the Gauss Kruger projection is not supported. Could you post the .SHP file?

I'll see if I can get it to work using an alternative projection method...

Or perhaps I need to update the external framework I am using.

  • Jonathan Wiederin

  • Arin Alia

Hello, first of all, thanks for the awesome work. I just installed Mosquito and it looks like Facebook component is not working for me. Same issue "forbidden". Other components seem to work fine.

  • Carson Smuts

Arin... the Facebook component needs an overhaul, I'll try to fix that ASAP.

  • David Cruz

hello, this is amazing tool, i would like to report that the facebook component is not working.

    thanks

  • Carson Smuts

Thanks David, I'm aware of this , will fix it ASAP ;)

  • Edward Palka

    Hi,

I am trying to get Mosquito to work, but am hitting a snag with the geography components. When I plug in any type of location information (i.e. a String or lat/lon.). The error that returns says "1. Solution exception:Could not load file or assembly 'Newtonsoft.Json, Version=4.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=30ad4fe6b2a6aeed' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified."

I have the file "Newtonsoft.Json.dll" in the folder with the Grasshopper components which I've installed. Do I need to move this somewhere else?

Thanks for any insight you might have!

  • Carson Smuts

    Dear Edward,

Yes this happens on some computers..... Did you close Rhino completely and restart Rhino? if that did not then a solution is to drop the Newtonsoft.Json.dll into the same folder as your Rhino.exe.

Try that out and let me know if it still does not work.

  • machinehistories

This update is great. The vector map tools are really captivating. I noticed there is no facebook component in the zipfile. I ended up installing that component from the previous version but it didn't seem to work with the example file. Am I missing something.

  • Carson Smuts

Machinehistories: That is correct...the Facebook plugin needs to be updated.... I'll have some time next week to update it. In the meantime, that component has been removed and the previous version will not work either until the next update.

  • David Cruz

    Hello everybody

I would like to know how does the Twitter Query work in mosquito.

I found in the website of Twitter for developers that there are 3 kinds of search

    1. When you are following an event that’s currently happening, you would be interested in search for recent tweets using the event hashtag:
    2. When you want to know what tweets are coming from a specific location, with a specific language
    3. When you want the most popular tweets of a specific user using a hashtag

I have notices that when one searches for a hashtag or a specific event mosquito is less sensitive and gets less data than when one searches randomly. Then, with which of these options is mosquito working?

    Thanks

  • Carson Smuts

    Dear David,

Could you provide me with a search example? Then I will have a good idea of what you are trying to achieve ;)

    Thanks

  • Lawrence Yun

    Hey,

I downloaded the mosquito zip file from studiosmuts.com. I dropped in all the contents of the folder into my C:\Users\Lawrence Yun\AppData\Roaming\Grasshopper\Libraries folder, but when I launch rhino and grasshopper, I can't find the mosquito components anywhere. I copied over every single file in the folder, and I've even restarted my computer. How get the components to load? Grasshopper is not reporting any errors during the startup process.

  • Carson Smuts

Dear Lawrence, which version of Rhino, Windows and GH are you using? not like this should make a difference, but I'm curious. I have not heard of anyone having the same problem.

  • Rafael Lemieszek

An intern tried to install it these days but she didn't copy all the files and folder in the zipped file - just the GHAs. Lawrence, have you copied everything, including the folder?

  • Carson Smuts

Rafael is spot on, you need to copy absolutely everything into the "Components" folder.

  • Lawrence Yun

Thanks for the response. I am running rhino 5 on windows 7 on the latest version of grasshopper. I don't seem to have a "components" folder. When I go to file>special folders>components folder, it takes me to the folder I mentioned in my previous post (I've got an image showing the contents of the folder including all the files from the zip file).

  • Carson Smuts

That is very strange.... which version of GH are you running?

  • Carson Smuts

New Serial For Vector Maps- You can renew the serial two ways:

    1) Download Mosquito, install it again, restart Rhino and you should be good to go.

    Or....

    2) Click on the little "gear icon" on the bottom left of the Mosquito Vector Maps component and enter this new serial for the Beta version:
