DIVA-for-Rhino is a plugin which runs thermal, daylight, solar radiation, and glare simulations. Our goal is to bring validated environmental simulations directly to the conceptual design environments of Rhino and Grasshopper.
I have a few questions regarding the thermal analysis component.
In viper component, I can see that direct and diffuse solar energy are available in outputs. Is there anyway to extract the transmitted/absorbed solar energy into the zone?
Does the one of the Viper inputs, “People”(number of people/m2), take consideration into occupancy difference throughout the day? If so, is it possible to see what the different percentages are? Better yet, is it possible to customize the percentage on hourly basis?
When would DIVA 2.0 be publicly available? I can't wait to see it.
Hello. I've been looking forward to run DIVA in my computer, but when I drag the DIVA.rhp file to Rhino I get the message that I should get the latest release of Rhino. Nevertheless I run SR8 in Rhino4 with any problems. I have successfully installed all the other components (Radiance, Daysim, etc). I managed to install also the GH components. Could someone help me? Thanks.
For the daylight simulation component, I was wondering if there is anyway to change the simulation settings in grasshopper rather than doing it in Rhino. I'd like to run a simulation for radiation nodes for the summer months and then for the winter months. Ideally, I'd like to have one simulation component for each set of months, so that I can get the data for both simulations into grasshopper at the same time. Is this possible? If not, has anyone figured out any useful workarounds for this type of situation.
I have an educational version of Rhino SR9 (12-Aug-2010), and I get an error saying I need a newer version. When I click 'check for updates' the webpage states that I have the newest version.
I just installed DIVA for Rhino 1.901. When I open up rhino I don't have the DIVA toolbar, and I can't find it anywhere. Also, when I run any of the DIVA commands, for example, "Metrics" I get a rhino script error: Microsoft VBScript runtime error, Type mismatch: 'info', Line: 41, Char: 16. Any advice? I have Rhino SR9.
Check the range of values being produced by the component for solar irradiation and the domain L0 and L1 of the false-color component. If it is at the default of 1, then everything is going to be topped out at blue, try something like 1500.
could you - or anybody else - be so kind and provide us with a gh-file to get started with DIVA? Especially how to achieve a shadow diagram with overlay of several sunpositions (see 3 posts before, from Igancios DIVA test) would be extremely helpful. Thanks a lot.
I'm trying to make the thermal analysis of a Metaball structure.
I modeled it with Grasshopper as a series of patches that follow the curve of the metaball and that work as ext. walls and planar surfaces on top as roofs and one under everything as a slab, all the structure is one single zone...
The issue is that when i run the Viper simulation it responds with an error message: "Geo can't be exported because it contains at least one non-planar surface".
So i checked with the "planar" command but none of the geometry figured out to be non-planar!
I'm not sure a single-zone thermal model is the right way to analyze your Metaball structure. Even if there were no internal partitions, the model would want to be divided into multiple convex zones, which, unfortunately, Viper cannot do.
The non-planarity warning is a separate issue. In principle, it shouldn't happen if your surfaces are planar. If you post the definition I can take a look.
M NICK -- Add the following line to the output control file:
Output:Variable,*,Zone Mean Radiant Temperature,hourly; !- Nickname=MRT [C]
Assuming you have the latest version of DIVA, the output control file will be here: C:\DIVA\Thermal\Grasshopper\IDF_Components\v2.005\02_output_control.idf
After saving the file, the next Viper component you drop on the Grasshopper canvas should have MRT as an option in the Settings form under the Output Tab.
We would need more information to troubleshoot - Did you already specify a locations, nodes, and material before you clicked the metrics button? Did you go through the instructions on in the tutorial or use and of the instructional videos? Check out the www.diva4rhino.com site for the tutorial. If you are still getting the error with the DIVA toolbar in rhino I recommend posting a comment in the DIVA for rhino section of the diva4rhino site as this part of the plugin does not use grasshopper, maybe with a screenshot and uploading your model.
I'm also trying to look at MRT as an output from Viper/E+. I've tried editing the IDF file listed below but found that I was unable to load the Viper component in GH after making the suggested adjustments. I know how to generate the MRT output separate from Viper but it would be nice to parametrically output MRT through Viper. Any thoughts as to why I'm getting a load component error after adding the MRT field to the output file listed below? Thanks
Output:Variable,*,Zone Mean Radiant Temperature,hourly; !- Nickname=MRT [C]
I have a problem with the geometry. It comes as a curved wall to the input on the Diva material component and exits as a simplified straight wall after this component.
Hello. Is it possible to use a translucent glass material in a daylight analysis using Grasshopper? The specific problem I have is that I would like to model a translucent skylight and use grasshopper/diva to test angle variations of shading fins above this skylight on interior illumination levels. As there is no translucent material in the gh diva material component, is it possible to assign a custom material in rhino and then include it in the model which is analyzed when the gh daylight analysis is run? or another way to do it?
Thanks Jeff. I would like to use the GenericTranslucentPanel_20 material, but this material is not shown in the gh material component even though it is in the material.rad file and accessible in the rhino diva menu. Not sure why it is that I can't get to it in gh. I see in the material.rad file that "The model requires the following two files have been added to a directory included in your RAYPATH variable (c:\daysim\lib or C:\Radiance\lib): rang.cal & Translucent20.dat" I'm not sure if this could be the problem because I only see "rang" in my Daysim\lib and I don't see "Translucent20" in either folder.. Any thoughts on this? I found that someone else had similar problem not seeing the translucent material in the gh menu.. here.. Not sure if they resolved it..
This should have been corrected. If you right click on a component you will see the version- if it is not 2.0.0.8 then you should install the latest version. Let me know if that does not resolve the issue.
Hi Jeff. I just reinstalled diva - version 2.1.1.1, but the grasshopper version is still being shown as 2.0.0.7, not 2.0.0.8. Is 2.0.0.8 included as the DIVA.ForGrasshopper.gha in the C:\DIVA folder? I copied this into my gh components folder, but I'm still seeing 2.0.0.7 as the component version, not sure why..
Hi everyone, I was wondering if Shaderade has been incorporated in the latest Diva versions?
I have found a similar question asked on November 2012 without a clear answer. Could you please inform me with anything related to the Shaderade component?
Hello Jeff Niemasz Awesome Plugin, but I've a little problem that the thermal analysis takes longer time than it should. It always stops at Initializing simulation for about 20 minutes. There's any way to make take less time. the shading element consists of like 12 planar surfaces, so as mush as i guess no modeling problem. Let me add when I only test one planar surface it runs quicker

Is there a way to add a slider in the viper component (like the one in DIVA). It can help when running parametric simulations using Galapagos.
Thank you.

I run Rhino 5 Evaluation x64 (I used the file from the 64 bit folder to install DIVA)
Anyone knows, what I do wrong?

The component is crudely meshing a nurb surface. Try meshing the curved surface to the desired resolution and then pass the mesh to the component.
