Triangulated surface with geomety on it

Hello

I'd like to do something like in picture below.

I know how to triangulate surface (divide surface in rectangles, and then in two triangles- is it right?) but have no idea how tu put the geometry on those triangles. I've seen tutorials explaining how to put such a things on rectangle but I guess that's not the same in case of rectangles?
