Boolean switch ?
What's the elegant way of saying :
If "whatever" =True, then execute this part of the definition, but if it's =False, then execute this other part ?
I seem to be stuck with manual switching...

The sift-combine commands are most elegant - based on a pattern the data is divided and later combined again, in between which you can execute different operations on the different data streams.
