Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi Nathan-

I hadn't realized that you had made Slingshot! with so many options for database operations...using SQL actions in my work is a dream come true (I have sometimes daydreamed of trying my own hand at an SQL component family for GH, though I was planning on naming it 'Elephant' ;)).  I'm working on a really complex BIM project right now, and being able to characterize and query various objects in a database is something that would be extremely helpful...once I get it going, I'll be delighted to share my results with you.

So I'm trying to install Slingshot, and have followed your links, and am not sure if I'm doing something wrong.  It looks like it's possible that there's a version incompatibility thing happening...I've gone to the MySQL site, and have downloaded the most current versions of the two pieces required to work with Slingshot!.  They are: MySQL Community Server 5.5.14 and Connector/Net 6.4.3.  I notice that in your links you have them set at 5.5.11 and 6.3.6, respectively...I've started up with some of your tutorials, and am getting error messages when I connect the CString component to the MySQL Database List component: "Could not load file or assemby: 'MySQL.Data, Version=6.3.6.0'  I went back to the MySQL site to see if I could find an earlier version to download, and the list it gives me only includes 6.3.7 in the 6.3.x grouping; after reinstalling with 6.3.7, I get the same error message...Does this look like a versioning issue to you, or have I missed something really easy?

Sorry to trouble you, and thanks in advance...I'm really chomping at the bit to get started with what looks like an amazing tool.

sincerely,

Dave,

Thank you for your feedback and I am glad you are excited to dive in.

You have also pinpointed a key oversight!  Yes, your error is related to the version of the .NET connector.  It seems MySQL has upgraded their .NET adapter and the older version has somehow vanished from their version library!  I will try and do a better job of staying on top of MySQL version changes in the future (no small task, to be sure)

I have placed the connector library version 6.3.6 on my wiki at the following link:

http://slingshot-dev.wikidot.com/local--files/grasshopper-mysql/mys...

Please also note that this link has temporarily replaced the website's link back to the MySQL .NET site to avoid future confusions.  I will work on a more permanent fix in future releases.

Please install this version and see if this resolves your connection issues.  The community server version you are using should be ok....let me know if it is not!

Best,

Nathan

Hi Nathan - Thanks so much for your help...unfortunately, the 6.3.6 installer is balking on me.  I've uninstalled the later version - as well as the community server.  The 6.3.6 installer starts up okay, and looks like it almost finishes, but then it says "rolling back changes" and ends with a pop-up telling me that it has failed to install...I really do hate to trouble you...do you know if there might be any files or dll's I need to delete for the older install to work?  I can't figure out why it refuses at the last moment, after everything looks good in the installation.  I'll dig around and see if I can't figure it out as well...

looks like I'm not the only one with this problem: http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=59507

Alright, so it appears installing dotnet 4.0 first somehow solves this problem (as mentioned as a fix in the bugs forum at mysql), because I've downloaded and installed it, and now 6.3.6 works as well.  Have community server back up as well, connection string and db list working fine...sweet!

dotnet 4 downloaded here: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=17851

Ah, yes.  I remember having a similar issue until I upgraded the framework.  I will make a note of this on the download page.

Sounds like you have it!  Let me know how things go.  Always interested to hear how it is being used.

So far so good...I love that you can just write the Query SQL straight up, and it allows for Sums, Counts, Group Bys, all that, you can call UPDATEs... So amazing! This will be a seriously transformative tool for my practice moving forward.  THANK YOU for this wonderful plug-in!

Thanks, Dave!  I am glad you are enjoying it.  If you run into any problems or have any suggestions, let me know.

I am interested to know how you are using it in your BIM workflow as this was one of my main reasons for developing the tools.
