Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi everyone,

I'm a beginner of GH, i try to applicate Image Sampler over a surface but when i put Polygon instead sphere i have a problem.

Someone could help me arrange the polygons with the faces on the surface? in which part of gh script i have to work?

(the next step is to extrude)

Any help would be muchly appreciated!

thanks

hi matteo, the problem with the rotation occurs because you are feeding points into a baseplan input, witch then defaults to xyplanes. To find the orientation of your surface you need to evaluate at one uvcoordinate (if its planar) and use the resulting frame with planeOrigin to show the polygon component where and in witch direction to place your polys.

thank you so much Alex!! this is what i need, now i can continue to develop the surface!!

last question, now i have to create the same surface but without the polys, i tried to make it using bake and then trim the surface in rhino, but my pc couldn't do it and rhino crashed.

Is there a way for make the complete surface in gh so then in rhino i don't have to modify it another time?

the result i'm looking for is something like that, but without extrusion, only surface.

thank you alex!

sorry matteo, but trimming is your last problem if you want to achieve the same effect as park or studio fm did with the cube. If you look at it exactly their hexagons are arranged "perpendicular" if one can say that for hexagons, your hexagons follow the isocurves of your surface. i hope you have enough time until your deadline, if so i would go through the grasshopper primer and watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyNaLHUDo4Q, i know its not exactly what you want but it would be a good start. But why dont you do this with illustator? scriptographer is a free plugin for illustrator, great for hexgrids and random scaling or anything that can be done in js. --> http://scriptographer.org/

yes i know that the effect is completely different, but this is an experiment (first time that i use gh) for an exam and i have to make it with a 3D, now i check your link thank you!

i wrote my last question because first i want to arrive to a complete surface (yes the result isn't the same) and then i try to improve.

anyway thanks for the advice!!

ok no worrys then. but trimming a surface with that many curves in GH can also be a bit of a hassle. better you construct a new planar surface out of curves. for instance out of your hex curves and a surrounding rectangle. then chop it to the shape you want on the four sides ( thats just 4 cuts instead of a few hundred)

ok, i've to try, unfortunately i have a bit of time till the deadline but i have to leard much more for develop cube's geometry...i want to check the illustrator's plugin first...
