Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi David -

There are a number of things on my request list, as you know, but one that is causing me undue pain is the lack of custom preview options for vectors.  Using the "Gradient..." feature is nice for a quick preview that is related to vector length, but it is useless for conveying certain other information, like membership in a particular group.  Because there is no color input for vectors, I am forced to build my own arrows, which for a large number of objects is incredibly expensive (so much so that it may be a deal-breaker).  Also, I would love to also see color preview for text objects, as well as bake-ability.  I use a custom script right now to add color and bake text, but it would be nice to see integrated into GH.

Thanks again,

Marc

Hi Marc,

Rather than building your own arrows, have you tried setting specific lengths for groups?

Say you have three different Groups if you set all of group 1 to be 0.99 units long group 2 to be 1.00 and group 3 to be 1.01 then your gradient could apply 3 distinct colours.

Or is this group association on top of length information as well.

Yeah, that's a good idea for a workaround but you still don't have control over the colors independent of the length.  It seems like a lot of trouble to go to set lengths for groups and then calculate the appropriate position on a gradient in order to get it right.  It would be easy enough for a couple simple vector types with similar length, but it gets tedious pretty quickly.  Also, what if you want to assign color dynamically?  What if you want vectors of the same group and color to be different in length?  Not possible with this workaround as far as I can tell...

I agree, I was just thinking about your deal-breaker in its current form.
