question about offsetting

I am finding that in a couple of places the offset curve function is creating problems - the offsets are exploding my curves and leaving me with poorly formed results. I have baked the original curves and tried offsetting by the same distance and there is no problem there. I am wondering if I were to code the offset, if that would somehow solve the problem. Or, are the visual components just packaged vb.Net code anyways
