Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi all, first off, I am new to GH and have been trying to learn via these discussions and forums and tutorials but haven't been able to find a way to solve my problem.

I am trying to create slits like you would for a waffle structure (where the material is half cut into each surface and then they slot together) but with non planar surfaces. I am trying to find the intersections on each of the surfaces to then be able to unroll them and laser cut them.

The region slits and box slits work but only for perpendicular flat surfaces and I haven't been able to figure out how to use this principal on irregular shapes which are all curved and shaped differently.

I have made this effect by hand through manually modelling it and doing all the intersections by hand but that was for a flat surface, when the shape is bending a twisting that is obviously not a feasible option.

I've also included an image showing the desired effect with the red lines showing the intersections and the blue lines showing how I am trying to get them to slot together.

Any and all help would be appreciated, I have been able to troubleshoot all my issues so far and really don't want to get stuck here.

Thanks in advance,

Nick.

Thanks Tom,

I had a feeling it may be harder than I first thought and your solution I think may work but it does sort of take away the parametric abilities to design and change and go back and forth. Nevertheless, I will keep looking and might end up going by your method anyway.

Cheers,

Nick.
