How to re-mesh and clean up a mesh terrain with delaunay

I have a mesh terrain that was created in micro station and there are lots of overlapping pieces from the loft that the guy used who made the mesh. (I dont use microstation yet but)

Thinking about using it down the line i am of course aware that overlapping faces are going to cause us problems at some point.

I was thinking about creating a grid of points then using the project to surface or the mesh ray/intersection component in grasshopper to create a point cloud on the mesh and create a much smoother more consistent mesh terrain using grasshopper delaunay triangulation or equivalent.

Is this possible...?

I tried once before but couldn't figure it out - as meshes dont seem to allow projection onto them in the same way that breps do...

any ideas??
