Gradient cull of mesh faces

I'm trying to remove a series of mesh faces in a gradient from transparent at the top to a more dense mesh at the bottom.  I've been able to select groups of mesh faces based on distance, but not to subtract them in a way that leaves some of the faces filled in the get an effect of slowly fading out. Please help.  This is what i have so far.
