Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

hello guys,

i have this grasshopper file of voronoi cells and i'm working on its fabrication... i would like to join the cells bu finger-joints so i won't have to use screws\columns\ beams et cetera...

a project that uses the same technique:

http://www.dezeen.com/2011/10/31/icditke-research-pavilion-at-the-u...

as you can see in the file i have tried to start doing the finger-joints in the purple group according to a discussion i have found :

http://www.grasshopper3d.com/forum/topics/i-need-help-4

but i'm struggling to make it work and i would love for some guidance or help

thank you very much :)

Exactly... yuval, do you have a robotarm to produce these parts?

the aim is not to produce it for real but to understand the fabrication process and to make it ready to manufacture- have a model of the cells with the finger-joints and maybe unfold each cell to make it flat and 2 dimensional..

if i'll do that than maybe i will try to manufacture this for real (by cutting the cell's parts in cnc machine and assemble them together)

Do you know what the software for the fabrication machine needs as an input? 3D objects? 2D curves?

Don't think I can help you though. Looks quit complex with the angled joints. This topic might give you some insights on the finger joints: http://www.grasshopper3d.com/forum/topics/i-need-help-4

the fabrication machine is a laser cut machine- it needs 2d curves

Oh waw. I just realized I referred to a topic which you referred to. Apologies.

The dezeen example above had to be made on a 5-axis mill. You can see this because the cut edges are mitered to be flush with the adjacent surface.

Each panel is a unique 3D object, unless the angle between panels is 90 degrees as per the linked discussion (allowing 2D objects).

so you say i need to make one voronoi cell, unfold it and than make the finger-joints instead of trying to make 3 or 4 cells together?
