solid differencing multiple solids

I'm trying to have a bunch of capped extrusions solid difference a larger capped extrusion... but with no luck.  if I just grab one item out of the list, I have no problem, but it seems like there's an issue with doing multiple solids at once.

is there a way to either group or combine the solids so they act as one on the larger mass?
